The predictor is back. 4 out of 4 results correct.
In the Championship Quarter finals, played in superb conditions, Daniel Fitzpatrick shrugged off an erratic tee shot at the first which cost him the hole, but went on to record a 2 and 1 victory over Riccardo.
With all the matches being very tight, Jonny, with what looked like Steve williams on his bag (informed later that it was probably Kenneth Williams) recorded a fine win over Alex Roy.
In game three David MacFarlane beat Mark Scanlan.
Match four saw Gordon Leith take another excellent scalp in Stevie Lapsley.
The semi finals will be on Friday night at 5pm and there will ne a big crowd to watch the game between two boys returning to the club after a short absence. They have both lost in the actual final in their day and both had similar handicaps before leaving. Daniel versus Jonny is a really tight match and will test all my predictive powers. I will go for (and it has just been a toss of the coin, literally) Daniel.
David MacFarlane will win through against a plucky opponent in Gordon Leith.
Assistance required - If there was anyone willing to lend a hand at the upcoming Member and Guest Day, then it would be much appreciated. The timeslot I require help at is between 0730 till 1300. Please drop me a wee note if you are available, thanks.

It may be time to hang up the predictor boots. Paddy Powere have contacted me to say that I owe them thousands, after I only got 2 out of the 8 guesses correct, from Monday's matchplay. Might be time to invest in a pet octopus?
Match 1 was OK in that Daniel was reasonably comfortable against first time qualifier, Paul Mitchell.
In the next game we had Craig Thomson against Riccardo Di Murro. This was a very even match with Riccardo acquitting himself very well throughout the tie against the favourite for the trophy. Indeed, it was Riccardo who looked the more composed as he won the only match whih went to sudden death. A fine scalp indeed.
Daniel against Riccardo on Wednesday night might be a real tight affair, but I will stick with one of the ones I got correct and go for Daniel. Am sure Riccardo will be pleased about that.
Stuart Alexander was matched against Alex Roy. Using all his previous experience in this event, Alex was just too good for Stuart on the night and finished impressively with 3, 3, 3 over the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth holes.
Graeme against Jonny was always going to be interesting. A more mature Jonny seemed to turn up, probably due to Archie on the bag, and, in a tight game, recorded a huge victory.
The match of wily old Alex Roy against Jonny will be particularly good to witness, but, Jonny, roared on by his supporters from the 'Black Cat Loyal', will progress.
DAvid MacFarlane proved too good for youngster Chris McAulay who should be pleased with the way he acquitted himself throughout the tie.
In a huge game, Andy Jamieson played Mark Scanlan and they had a real tussle. Both players, playing seventeen, where Mark was one up, displayed signs of nerves and both had a chance to win the hole, but eventually halved it. A putt on eighteen to square the game slipped past for Andy and he will need to wait another year for his chance. Excellent result for Mark.
David MacFarlane will play Mark in the quarters and this is a toss of the coin job. David to win.
The result of the night went to Gordon Leith. Against Crawford Rae, Gordon displayed a wonderful temperament. He was two up playing seventeen and watched as Crawford birdied the hole. A long wait on the eighteenth tee did not appear to put either player off and Crawford followed up his good tee shot with an iron to the back of the green, thirty feet away from the hole. Gordon pulled his second shot into the back left bunker. With the pin in close to it, it was Gordon to play, knowing that he would probably progress with an up and down. He splashed out to around ten feet and calmly putted the ball into the hole. Marvellous stuff and received in true sporting fashion by Crawford.
This result would mean that there would be a new name on the trophy this year (unless a Roy gets on it!).
Gordon's reward for such a fine victory will be a game against Stephen Lapsley. In his tie aainst Stevie Gordon, Stephen was another player who used many years of playing at this level to his advantage, but am sure Stevie will have many other opportunities.
Gordon versus Stephen is another tie which is difficult to predict, but Gordon deserves the nod due to his fine win.

Gents, first of all, I would like to congratulate the winning line up, for Tuesday night's semi final victory away to Old Ranfurly. Wins from Cammy McLellan and Harry Paton (their second away wins in a row) are exceptional. Harry, playing off 21 was two down after two. However, when he dropped in his second birdie two of the day, his opponent was left devasted and came up with the old, but highly accurate observation of "What joker gave you such a handicap?". Coming in at the last minute, Stevie McDowell managed a creditable half, which is also no mean feat on unknown territory. David Williams, a blossoming musician, had his second consecutive defeat. Even the hairdrier treatment had no effect nor did the coaxing and cajoling stuff help. So, in the words of the Bay City Rollers "Its Bye, Bye, Baby, Baby, Goodbye".
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has taken part in the campaign up to now and assure them that they are not forgotten as regards a place in the final, which will be at a neutral venue on September 4.
I have enclosed a revamped timesheet for Saturday, which has come about after some calls offs.
Please make a careful note of your new game.
Finally, another reminder regarding the entry fee for the Member and Guest Day. This is to be in before the weekend, thanks.

What do Alex Jasper, Peter Gallagher and Alan Wylie all have in common? A strangely disjointed trio I know, so, as a wee extra clue for afficionados of Greenock GC history, I will throw in Captain Peacock, Ian Findlay, who now resides in the U S of A. Answer later on.
Mid July sees our course being brought to a peak in terms of course condition, for our club championship. Members eagerly look forward to this day for weeks on end and it was no surprise that we had the biggest turnout, 170, of the year. The format was a round played on Saturday, from which the top sixty scratch scores would progress to a second strokeplay round next weekend. It turned out that this score was actually a lower than expected ten over par, eighty, but, due to calloffs, other players filtered into the second round.
With the weather being brutal for the first hour of the day, Craig Thomson's seventy, might actually be considered the best round of the day, having played four holes in extreme conditions. Last year's champion, Kenny Roy, returned a seventy eight to be in forty fifth place and will need to scramble past a bunch of players to reach the last sixteen matchplay stage. As regards the current top sixteen, there is not much to choose, with many favourites bunched between seventy one and seventy three. Graeme McLellan, Andy Jamieson, Jonny Caldwell and Alistair Roy would be formidable opponents if they get through.
Excellent scores of seventy were brought in by Steven Gordon, who, in the gusty wind, used his height to his advantage and the improving Stuart Alexander, who has added supreme confidence to his game, since defeating the self appointed one last year. His resulting net sixty five would mean a handicap returning to its lowest ever level.
Incredibly, and never before, have four players equalled par in the first round of the competition and their sixty eights were the best of the day, all achieved in different manners. First to return this score was David MacFarlane with two halves of thirty four. Immediately after this came multiple club champion in Crawford Rae. Out in thirty six, he came back with three birdies for a thirty two and would secure the scratch prize with this back nine. With the only five on his card recorded at the tenth, Daniel Fitzpatrick had a superb front nine of threes and fours for thirty three and would come home in thirty five. In a reverse of these scores, Mark Scanlan would also join the others in the first round lead.
As regards the net scores on the day, many players will be very disappointed that the CSS dropped to a sixty eight, but, James Harkness will be the most satisfied with a terrific performance over the closing holes. Nine handicapper, James, who puts in many hours of practice, must have been frustrated on reaching the thirteenth tee at nine over par. A run of 2, 3, 4, 2, 5, 3 (4 birdies and a par at the fifteenth) in his last six holes shot him up the leaderboard and also meant a net sixty five.
In section two we had a three way tie on sixty eight . Bob Hughes and Alistair Livingstone would be astonished to discover that Charlie Marner had pipped them for the medal. Charlie played his usual nondescript front nine of seven over par. However, a consistent (synonymous for boring) back nine had a highlite of a two at sixteen and a double bogey at seventeen.
In the third section, the most recent recipient of the handicap committee's lack of knowledge, James Glover, had a superb sixty five. Twenty handicapper James would have five pars and two birdies on his card and has seen his handicap savaged to nineteen!
Larry Deveney (No Relation, which strangely he insists is made public!) had an incredible round. Playing off eighteen, Laurence was only three over after six holes. Amazingly, he then went six, three, nine to be out in ten over par. Shaking this off, he had two birdies in a back nine of three over par for a net sixty three.
Eclipsing all these efforts, however, was Kevin Murphy. Sixteen handicapper Kevin had the most consistent round in the section with two excellent halves of thirty nine. Kevin has never broke forty for a front nine before and, although, he has had two previous thirty nines for a back nine, he breaks eighty for the first time and does it in style. A landmark round!
The answer to the poser at the start, is that they were the group of players who brought the County Cup to the club for the one and only time, many years ago, in 1993, defeating Gourock 3-1 in the final. This Tuesday, after defeating Renfrew magnificently away from home in the quarter finals, our team travel to darkest Bridge of Weir for a semi final against Old Ranfurly. We wish Cammy McLellan, David Williams and Harry Paton well and hope they enjoy the experience of representing our club at such a high level.
Please remember to post your Member & Guest entry money before Friday's cut off day.

There was only one story in town this weekend. Whilst all eyes were on the big rollover, four times champion, Craig Thomson, became the lowest handicapped golfer to win a handicap event at Greenock GC in living memory. J M Ritchie's victory in the 1930 Murray Cup would probably be the nearest to Craig's achievement. Against a field of over 140 players, all with a better allowance than himself, Craig did not just win the Centenary Quaich, he absolutely destroyed the field, winning by two clear shots from Stevie Wilkie. In order to perform this feat, Craig recorded a score which equals his best ever over the links and he put together a superb inward nine of three under par.
The remaining players in section one were unaware of the score of Andy Jamieson. Andy was two under par for seventeen holes, but had run up an incredible nine at the par four eighth.
Andy will be a contender for the forthcoming Championship, where there does not seem to be a clear favourite. Perhaps Kenny can get a boost from his share of the twos rollover, can Mac take a step into the history books or will one of the returning runners ups to the club, in Daniel or Jonny, step up to the mark. I am sure that our other young stars in Mark Scanlan and Stevie Mullan will feel they have a real chance.
Section two is the home of the golfer who has decided to be Mr Average and does not practise too much, but just turns up every Saturday and hopes for the best and that it will be his day. The self appointed one is a prime example of this type of player and he scrambled his way around to 6 boring pars and 12 even more boring bogeys for a fourth place of sixty eight. Gone are the glory days of sneaking up in the middle of the night to put in some time and have a few shots up his sleeve.
Joint runner ups were Jim Gallagher and Alistair Livingstone. They are also twelve handicappers, of differing eras, with Jim recording every number between two and seven in his seventy nine. Big Al had a super back nine of four over. Winning the section was Raymond Morrison. A very steady outward half of thirty nine was follwed by a matching score for the return. A sixty six will mean a handicap reduction for Ray, who recently performed well at Whinhill's Open competition.
In section three, Harry Paton's handicap continues to plummet and he will be pleased with his consistent halves of forty five and forty four which meant a net sixty six. New member, Stuart Crawford, has now seen his handicap drop by four shots this season with his net sixty five. However, winning the section on the countback and also being the runner up in the quaich, is Stevie Wilkie. Stevie nearly did not get to play on Saturday afternoon, as he was almost press ganged onto a pirate ship at the James Watt dock earlier in the morning! Big Eck and the Roadrunner avoided the Tall Ships event for this very reason.
We have now stumbled over the half way stage of the season and players will need to review their ambitions for the year and hopefully we will get some better weather in the weeks ahead to assist.

What an incredible few weeks for the top brass of the club. The Past Captains, in particular, are doing well. PC Alex is still going strong in his defense of his Challenge Cup and is on course for a last four meeting with Big Eck, according to Mr Jasper. Unbelievably, PC JC remains a contender in the Foursomes (Julie must be playing well!). Ex PC, now VC, Alee, would like to change his title to "The Archbishop", as he is trying to go Two, Two in the unedifying chase for a few quid. GGC's answer to Jedward, John and Mike, have progressed to unfathomed territory in the Provost . So, all in all, with this activity, the old tumbleweed will be getting blown off the Past Captains spot in the car park.
With it being the second week of the Seniors fortnight we had the over 65s competition in the Turner Quaich. Some of these guys are obviously a bit deaf and, unfortunately, JMK missed out on a chance of a trophy when he overheard, mistakenly, that the golf this week was from the Confessional! He decided not to play.
With the return of Jonny Caldwell from the USA, the section one guys upped their game in order to get some sweep money before Jonny cleans up with his newly acquired TWO handicap. The self appointed one has reached a new level of incompetence with this allocation and it may actually rival the ten shots given to Paul Mitchell many years ago., but not quite reaching the nineteen of Alan Rodgers!
As usual, the weather was dross in the morning, but that did not deter Gerry Donnachie from taking advantage of greens which are becoming better by the week. A terrific score of seventy, net sixty five, was only slightly marred by a five at the last, to win the medal.
Andy Brands, sent out at seven o'clock, in the new measures being implemented to combat slow play, of which he is a big fan, returned his best score for years in a net sixty seven to equal Ian McDermid in second place.
In section two, we had similar rounds from Davie Bruce and Stevie Cameron 2, where they both shot seventy nine which meant net sixty sevens. However, the winning score, and certainly one of the rounds of the year, came from Robert Leith. Twelve handicapper and known bottle merchant, and he does not work for Jaggers, Robert was level par for his first eight holes and bogied the last for a terrific thirty six. A great par on the eleventh meant he stood on the twelth tee still only one over par. It was just then that his playing partners started to hear a slight jingle of glass on glass. He would bogey five of the next six holes but would rally to complete a marvellous round with a birdie at the last for a net sixty one and a ten handicap.
There was a terrific fight for the medal in the third section with a whole bunch of players shooting from net sixty six to sixty nine. Jim Fleming and JC Appleton would share second place with commendable sixty sixes. However, overcoming his obvious nerves at being joined by the self appointed one, Past Captain John Glen, determined to put on a show. Like an Aidan O'Brien gelding, John enjoyed the good to soft going, and started slowly with a double bogey and then a bogey before getting into his stride. Carrying a handicap of seventeen, John reached the half way stage in forty two and was only part of a pack of players at this time.A par at ten would be followed by a double at eleven and a poor three put on twelve. There was no sign of anything being left in the tank at that stage. However, he raced to the front with a run of four pars over the next five holes. A poor drive at the last put him on another course altogether and he was heard to ask MM how far he had. So poor was his tee shot, the reply was "two furlongs!". The resulting bogey would secure a net sixty three and inroads into his best previous handicap of nine (Darroch Park, circa 1975) would be made.
The Turner Quaich winner was Ian McDermid.
The draw was made for the Whinhill Seniors, sponsored by matchplay and the usual suspects are all there.
Previous winners Jim Docherty is pitted against Ergate Ayana. Tricky one here, but think Ergate plays a bit more and will go for him
Ian McDermid will be up against Mike Morrod. Would never take an Englishman for anything so the evergreen one to get through.
Rocking Robin Goodall will be able to go to follow his passion for punk as he will get short shift from another past winner in Alan Young.
Nicol versus John is another match which takes no time at all to predict. Nicol McCloy will be like Tony McCoy and ride roughshod over John.

Seniors Championship Qualifier
The legends circuit swung into life when the 12th Seniors Championship got under way on Saturday and we ended up with a real quality set of participants in the matchplay stages. These over fifty fives are battle hardened and relish turning the clock back to be competing with their peers. The best qualifying score came from John Houston with a great seventytwo which resulted in him winning the Laurie Trophy for the best net score of the day. Jim Fulton took the eighth place with an eightyone. Of those who did not make the cut, Jim Kerr will be the most disappointed as he missed out by a single shot, having finished the last four holes in a seven over par run of six, five, six, five! He must have got that cheap lager last week after all.
The self appointed one asked one of his heroes, Sepp Blatter, to conduct the draw and the following was the result.
First out the hat was the holder, Alan Young. Alan is up against an old friend in Jim Logue. Its been a couple of years since Jim has reached this stage, but, I believe that this might be the upset of the first round and last year's winner will make an exit.
Next out was the leading qualifier, John Houston who is up against second time qualifier in Alan Wylie. Although he has the experience from being the runner up in the club championship of 1986, Alan, who took nine more shots than John, will need to be at his best against an opponent who will wish to erase the memory of being taken apart in an early round last year. JC to progress
The most evenly matched tie will be between Captain Jim and Jim Fulton. Both have scored the same to enter the matchplay and both have the same handicap of eight. With the cabin boy on his bag, we go for JHD to get through.
In the final game, first time qualifier, GP Alan Hulme, is pitted against five times winner in evergreen Ian McDermid. Alan will require to put in some major practice, along with the other doctors at the club, all of whom seem to dismiss their ever-growing surgery queues with the old adage of "Time is a great healer" whilst they are on the links. Ian has a habit of winning this compeition every odd year and will be too good for Alan and will be matched up against John Houston in the final.
Steady golf was played by Jim Haddock, George Anderson and Dennis McKelvie for their net sixtynines in section three. James Glover took the third place with his better inward half. There were joint first place players in Alistair Campbell and Mick O'Brien. Seventeen handicapped Alistair had a great seven first holes where he was only two over par, the highlite of which was a hugely lucrative two at the seventh. An outward half of forty was complimented by an inward nine of forty five. Mick O'Brien, also seventeen, had a poorish front nine of fortyfive, but put together an excellent run for home with only a blemish of a six at eighteen to mar a forty.
Two different net seventys were put together in section two. Robert Leith had two consistent halves of forty one and Kenny Parker demonstrated how to shake off an unimpressive front nine of forty six when he came back in a superb thirtyeight. Joe Mitchell has had a good season to date and will be pleased with his net sixty nine which did not include any twos. Fighting on both the Challenge Cup and Reid Rose Bowl fronts is John Ellis who has hit a great run of form recently and should make the move to single figures before too long.
However, absolutely destroying the field was Rab McLaughlin. Big Rab's regular study of the course whilst walking his Bichon Frises has made a difference to his course management. In the past he lurched around, but, on Saturday he was like a terrier and put together eighteen great holes in a net sixty five. The big man intends to use the sweep money to buy those mutts some real grub and wean them of the Pro Vs.
Tremendous scoring came in the first section, probably due to everyone practising hard to try to get a couple of twos. There were actually twenty one of these birdies achieved in this section! Neil Delussey and Stuart Alexander will both be pleased with their net sixty sixes, but the score of the day came from Paul McAulay. Now that he has been reinstated to the greenstaff (noticeable difference in the condition on Saturday) and taken over from Jimmy we should see much improvement in the course. A level par front nine set him up nicely for what might have been his best ever round, but a six at seventeen should not disappoint him too much for his seventy.
The return match in the County cup took place last week. In a tactical master stroke by the self appointed one, the team was changed ever so slightly and Elderslie players were extremely upset and rattled not to be confronted with the original 'Elderslie Four'. Needing to evercome a four nil first leg defeat, Cammy was sent out first and came in with a two and one victory. George Boyd, who only just missed the axe, made amends with a great five and four win and newcomer David Williams managed a narrow two and one victory. It all hinged on the final game, but, incredibly, Elderslie had only sent three players down, so confident were they in putting the tie to bed. This meant a ten and eight win and a four each result in the match. Greenock go through on 'holes up' to play away to Renfrew in the next round.
Please remember that the Greenock Open competition takes place this Sunday, and there a few times remaining.

Reid Rose Bowl - Sat 28 May 2011
With one of the Major competitions of the year being played over Royal Greenock last Saturday, the McAulay Course was brought into play to test the mettle of all competitors for the Reid Rose Bowl qualifying. This was to prove a master stroke by the self appointed one and would remove the wheat from the chaff. Blustery and wet conditions greeted the early starters, as usual. Having saved the course the previous week, the pins were positioned in tricky, but accessible, positions and the grass on the tees were deliberately left long in order to identify players' abilities in recovering from the rough. Eventually, it would be discovered that a net seventy would secure entry to the matchplay stages and anyone on net seventy one would play off next Saturday for remaining places.
As always, there are the hard luck stories of those who just missed out. With seventy three we find Scott Hunter, who dropped five shots over holes fourteen, fifteen and sixteen. Stuart Gallacher finished six, six, four, five and playing partner Nicol closed with a five and a six to record their seventy threes. John Gunn never really overcame the handicap of a seven at the fourth in his seventy two. We can only wonder what happened to four times champion and previous Rose Bowl winner, Craig Thomson, who played the last four in three over.Out in an impressive thirty six was Stephen Lapsley, which included a three, three, three start and thirty seven was the score from Stephen Mullan. However both fell short by a stroke when Mr Lapsley had an incredible eight, five finish and Mr Mullan completed his round with a three at seventeen only to be struck by the curse of King's Burn where he ran up a seven.
Twenty one handicapper, Hugh McGarrigle, recorded his single par at the third, but could not manage another over the remaining fifteen holes and joined the unlucky ones to just miss out.
The contenders in next week's final qualifier are Brendan Harley, Ian Jamieson, previous winner, Jim Kerr and John Ellis. Praise must go to the Lord of the Splash who scraped in by virtue of a fine birdie at the last. The Lord has reached the semi final of this competition before apparently, although no one can ever remember that level of loser but himself.
The third section would see four players qualifying. Determined to shake off a defeat in last year's final is Hughie Lyden who came home with a seventy one. The roadrunner will be hoping to avoid his nemesis in Frankie Bhoy. Stuart Crawford ran up a nine at nine but settled down. Stuart needs some cut-down clubs as he has been chopped off at the knees. Mick O'Brien demonstrated steady play for his nice sixty eight. The best net score of the day went to Big Eck who now has sights set on a treble of Rose Bowl, Provost and Challenge Cup. Starting at seven o'clock he was quickly ensconsced in the lounge by ten fifty and would regale any interested party with each and every stroke. Demonstrating amazing powers of concentration it did not seem to put him off if the coversation took another road. Eck just marked his ball and then, when there was a lull, would return, pick up his marker and start again. Having now heard a good number of times about a mini disaster at the ninth, we all agree that he should have taken a drop!
There would only be two qualifiers from section two. Andy Gunn plodded his way to a neat seventy and Haggis used years of fruitless Challenge Cup campaigns to put together his best round in years.
A quality group of seven qualifiers from section one reaffirmed the toughening of the course. Holder, Frankie Bhoy, shot a seventy as did past Challenge cup winner Dunky Anderson. Just what they are putting into Whyte and Mackay products ought to be checked out, as evergreen Ian McDermid returned a seventy five less five to gain entry. The elixir of youth, indeed. Perhaps RAB should switch from Black Label if he intends to attempt a round next week. Paul McFarlane joins two recent championship runners ups in Al Roy and Big Mac with all three scoring net sixty eight in the balmy afternoon conditions. Completing the lineup is Championship winner Cammy McLellan who used his generous handicap of four to full effect with a net sixty eight.
We await the draw next week with interest.
The Challenge Cup has been progressing nicely and there have been a few upsets, notably Mark Wilkinson taking the scalp of Frankie Bhoy. David Williams will be pleased to have taken Dennis McKelvie to the thirteenth green before succumbing to the better player. Worth a watch will be John McQuillan and Si Middleton.
In a home and away fixture against Elderslie in the County Cup, the four representatives were under instructions to "keep it tight till we get them back to our patch". The selector did not know that the word patch would come back to haunt him. The four protagonists will now be forever known collectively as "the cabbage patch golfers". The hairdrier treatment will now be required at half time. Four handicapper,Cammy, lost 2 &1. Stevie McCafferty, (remember the name, because I wont!) lost 6 & 4. How about Scott Hossack? Who is Scott Hossack, because he is confined to the history books as well. Lost 6 & 4. George Boyd did us proud with a last hole defeat. Our tarnished reputation needs to be restored in the home leg. Can we at least get a half in one game? Players wanted.

Provost Trophy - Saturday 14 May 2011
There was no adequate description to describe the horrible conditions for the Provost Trophy qualifying. With the weather only turning really bad around ten, the real early starters would eventually make up the bulk of the qualifiers. Indeed seven of the final sixteen came from the first ten games to go out. It was fortunate that the greenstaff had wisely pushed every single medal tee as far forward as possible, which,at first, seemed a really strange policy for such a prestigious event, but this helped to ensure players could put together a score. It was also a testament to the work which must have taken place on the greens that they survived the continuous downpour and remained playable all day.
There are always hard luck stories each week, but , with the final qualifying score being seventy, Mark McCaig and Scott Hunter must rue finishing with nets five and seven for their last two holes in their seventy and missed out on the countback. Also suffering the same fate were Jim Kerrigan and Stevie Cameron who would fail by a single shot on their best last six.
With the draw being made by Gareth Caldwell, we can reveal the following:
Big Eck and Frank, the Centenary Champ, Molloy will take on the two Alans of Currie and Moore. Am sure Beefy would like to make a small wager on himself, but the predictor goes for Eck and Frank to run them off their feet.
Paul Mitchell and Steven Watt, although having healthy handicaps versus abilities will find it too difficult against Duncan Anderson and Andy Jamieson.
Big John Gunn and Graeme Knox have been given the benefit of a training session against Past Captains John Glen and Mike Morrod.
Having been the number one qualifiers Hughie Lyden and Alan Hulme will fancy their chances against new member Richie Pickett and George Anderson. Big Hughie is still showing the scars of a losing Rose Bowl final last season and Alan has sights on the Seniors tour. Richie and George to progress.
In the bottom half, we have Kenny Parker and Bob Hughes against Edward Spence and Stephen Wilkie. This is the most difficult tie to predict, but will go for the ponderous duo to slow things down and drag things to a crawl. These tactics will successfully put off Edward and Stephen.
Vinny Hurrell and new member Blaine Jamieson are up against another new member in Stuart Crawford and George Deveney. The allocation of handicap to Blaine was extremely severe in respect to that of Stuart. So, with plenty of shots in hand, Stuart and George will get through comfortably.
The tie of the round will be between Robert Johnstone and David Heron against Paolo and Robin Goodall. Matchplay specialists David and Paolo should cancel each other out, so this tie will depend on which Robin turns up. With another Challenge Cup campaign taking up his interest, we go for Davie and Bob.
Captain Jim and cabin boy Drew are matched up with Nicol McCloy and Stuart Gallacher. No brainer - Nicol and Stu.
The final will be contested between Duncan and Andy against Stuart and George.

Spring Meeting - Sat 7 May 2011
With golfers the length and breadth of Europe waking up to the sad news of the death of Seve Ballesteros, it was only fitting that the club flag at Greenock was placed at half mast as a mark of respect for a golfing genius and a person who attracted thousands to the sport. This is only the second occasion in living memory where this gesture has been afforded to a non member. The other time was for Princess Diana.
As it was the Spring meeting the turnout was excellent, with over 160 participants, and even some of the old hands turned up to try to turn the clock back. It was a surprise to see 4 times championship runner up, Roy Brabender, apparently doing some social work, in partnering Jada Kidd in their attempts to secure a Major trophy. On the day, Jada wasted too much energy playing to the crowd and his Bubble burst with a no score.
In section 3 there was a whole raft of players who had got themselves into reasonable positions with only a few holes to go,but unfortunately fell down slightly .Bill Jamieson, four over for the last three holes, ended up with a seventy one. One sixty nine we had Sam McNeill finishing seven, eight and both Vinny Hurrell and Archie Essler took sevens at the last to end up with sixty nines. Eighteen handicapper Alistair Simpson was thirty nine to the turn, but let the self appointed on off the hook, by coming home in forty six for a net sixty seven.
Michael O'Neil finished with a net sixty seven also, which featured a eight, four, seven and four last holes. Barry Rackham threw off the running up of a ten at the fifth and returned a net sisty six. However, it was Jackie Norman who took top spot with a sixty five. This is not the first time in the season that Jackie has made inroads into his handicap. Asked about his new secret weapon, Jackie, replied that he had new ear plugs in when playing with big Duncan.
Section two witnessed a tactical blunder of Tony Mowbray proportions when George Deveney actually came in with a net sixty six. The latest increase in sweep money must have been the inducement in attempting to reduce an overly inflated handicap! It was not to be his day, however, as he finished in fifth place alongside Mark James. Two halves of thirty nine will be scant consolation for Mark. Graham McIntyre's card was a demonstartion of steady golf, barring a six at fifteen and he will be more than happy to come in with a sixty five. Twelve handicapper, John Ellis, had an excellent front nine of thirty seven which contained seven pars! A back nine of thirty nine would mean a net sixty five. John was pipped for the spot in the Kinnaird trophy by a better inward half from Craig Brown. After running up a seven at the ninth to be out in forty, Craig came home in a terrific two over par.
Sob stories will come from Charlie McDowell, as he used up five strokes of his eight handicap in the last four holes for a net sixty nine. A six, six finish from Jim Kerr had the same result. Multiple junior champion, Dave Terrey, had three sixes in his round of net sixty eight. Out in forty two, John Gunn played as though he thought it was the Hangover Trophy. However, a marvellous back nine of thirty four gave John third place with a net sixty eight.
Runner up was past champion, Cammy McLellan. Playing off four, Cammy had a gross seventy one, to achieve a net sixty seven. Perhaps Cammy should look to the pre match routine of the section winner, to see what commitment, practice and determination can do to a player's score. Alistair Roy, who dines out on being the brother of the club champion, had a two halves of level par for a gross sixty eight and net sixty five, winning the section by two shots.
Attached is the outstanding sweep monenies for the Challenge Cup and Captains Foursomes and also an up to date entry sheet for the Tennent Trophy. I would ask everyone who has entered the Tennent to put their entry money of £12 per team into the secretary's box. Thanks

Saturday 23 April 2011 - Navy Cup
Saturday saw the first actual trophy of the season being played for at Greenock GC in the Navy Cup Greensomes. With over 150 members turning out to grab some silverware competition was ferocious. Last year's winner, Don Shields, posed an early question of the field. It was 'what is the difference between John Leith, last year's partner and Stephen Cameron, this year's?' Twelve shots was the reply.
With most players struggling on the tricky greens, scoring was a few shots higher than last year and the early running was dominated by William Jamieson and Roger Sykes who returned a net 63.6, which would stand for a few hours. Going out together were the big guns, well, Brendan excluded, of Graeme McLellan and Brendan Harley. A superb round of 67 only meant a 63.8 net score, whereas the 69 from Duncan Anderson and Scott Hunter would get them a 63.
Ad hoc teams can sometimes be the most dangerous and the pairing of Charlie Marner and the self appointed one, who has previously won this competition on two occasions, started inauspiciously with a bogey. However, some amazing golf, which amazed both of them in no small measure, put them onto the seventeenth hole well in command of the competition. A good drive was followed by an excellent approach to the green leaving a put of about 12 yards. Well, taking a leaf from his namesake, Giorgio bottled the job and made an absolute hash of the put which had no oomph and hardly travelled halfway and left the Mariner groaning, 'this guy is just a big albatross'.
They then witnessed Charlie's own put lip out. A par at the last, their thirteenth of the round, would mean a clubhouse lead with net 62.6. 2 players who had excellent scores on the previous Wednesday, with net 68 and net 69, were Chris Docherty and Paul Weston. With handicaps of 21 and 18 the self appointed one would finally be the victim of his own well known handicapping incapabilities.
The two lads would have five pars and four bogeys in a front nine of 39. Even six dropped shots over the loop could not deter Paul and Chris and they came home with a 42 to return a net 62.2 to win the competition by 0.4 of a shot. The congratulations of every member of the club will go out to the two first time winners. Charlie has been the unlucky runner up twice in recent weeks and will need to take a long hard look at his technique and see if dramatic swing changes are required.

Saturday Sweepstake 16 April 2011
Greenock's got no talent! This week the self appointed one selected two groups of members to go forth and represent the club in a couple of important matches. First up, in the Daily Mail Foursomes, were Waldorf and Stadler, which is an insult to a couple of real Muppets. No, it was the InFirm team of Jimmy McAulay and Frankie Bhoy Molloy. Travelling up to the bright lights must have blinded them, as they returned having been soundly thrashed by a pair of Cowglen GC members, presumably males. "We had to give away too many shots" was the feeble excuse. "How many?" was asked of them, thinking some sort of a record for handicap allowance might have been reached. "An incredulous four shots" retorted our valiant pair. The old adage of red and green should never be seen, sprang to mind.
In the other match, a five man team event, in the form of the Mail on Sunday Classic, was dispatched overseas to Dumbarton, a venue previously only known for a big dod of rock and a road which took people to Loch Lomond. At least their excuses were more in keeping with the honour of having been selected to represent our club. First up was Stephen Lapsley who was unfortunate to come up against an opponent who had five birdies in the front nine alone. I am sorry to relate that we do not have the name of this golfing behemoth who hides away in Dumbarton of all places. Peter Gallagher, who left all his golf on the course the previous day, when finishing with three successive threes, was five down at one point and was glad to escape with only a one down defeat. "That's a moral victory!" he claimed. Paul McAulay was really unfortunate in that he said his opponent could make the par threes, of which there are 3 and each one is 185 yards, with only a seven iron. Perhaps Paul had never played at altitude before. Runner up in the Championship, Graeme McLellan, will probably need a lesson or two from his Championship winning sibling after attempting to take on Dumbarton's Champion, who must be some player if he is better than Steven's opponent, so no real excuse there. Congratulations to Alex McGregor for gaining a victory.
Saturday's sweepstake saw another Championship runner up, but from a different era entirely, Duncan Gracie come home in a terrific thirty eight blows to register a net 69. No bad for a guy of 80 odd. Another veteran in section three is Donald Petrie. Donald generally records one good score per year. Playing off 25, the Don had an outward half of eight over and will be disappointed to finish in nine over par for his last four holes to record a net 67. Following on from his excellent score last week, Laurence Deveney also had a net 67, which included a seven at four followed by a nine at five. One to watch for the Challenge Cup?
In section two Craig Love played some steady golf, off a ten handicap, where he had 12 pars in making a net 66. This only meant third place. Fifteen handicapper, Pat Bryceland, will definitely be worth watching. Coming from the same stable as previous rugby / cricket boys (see Currie, Arnott, Knox, Gunn and Campbell) it was no surprise to see a net 65 recorded. A superb front nine of thirty eight was really consistent. Three sixes marred his back nine where he came home in forty two. Pat will be well pleased with a net 65. Six straight pars to start any round is good stuff and Gordon McFarlane must have been as surprised as anyone in doing so. However he reached the turn in 38. Gordy, who has a car body repair business, was affected by the slow play and the effect of sniffing paint thinners began to wear off in the back nine and mistakes began to creep in. He steadied the ship late on and won the section with a net 64.
In section one, we had Brendan Harley, whose handicap has crept up to six, begin with a six but managed to play within himself for an outward thirty nine. Displaying some form of the old Brendan, he came home in one over par and took third place with a net sixtyseven. John McQuillan, who was never distracted by the result from Everton, played the golf that he showed he was capable of in recent years. A one over par front nine was followed by four over coming home. Super net sixty five. The winner of both the scratch and net prize in the group was Stuart Alexander. For a five handicapper, Stuart front nine of three over was regulation stuff, but a great inward run of two under par reminded everyone what the current Captains Foursomes holder can do when not plagued by injury.
Next week is the Navy Cup and it might be worth noting that a 60 was the winning score last year.

Saturday Sweepstake 9 April 2011
Blessed with terrific weather on Saturday and encouraged by events in Augusta, Greenock GC members turned out in their droves to try to emulate the stars at the Masters. In section 3, Danny Fulton, of whom substantial handicap reductions were predicted last year until a serious injury put paid to his season has started with a steady net 68. Going out together, two friends, Scott Hossack and Laurence Deveney, who both have 22 handicaps, went head to head for the top slot in the section. One over par for his first seven holes was excellent scoring from Laurence but a potential superb front nine was spoiled by a couple of double bogeys and it would not be until the eighteenth that he would see another par. Meanwhile Scott was out in nine over for a forty four. He then took a seven at ten and must have thought that he could not catch his pal. A strong run of pars and a seven at fifteen meant that they stood on the eighteenth tee evenly matched. Fired up by each other's play the went eyeball to eyeball a la Brown and Boyle and both lads ended their round with a par to finish exactly equal. Well done!
Section 2, Robert Johnstone threw off the worry of the investigation currently taking place by the golfing authorities. Robert, born in December 1990, has been accused of singing Sagittarian songs on the course. A shaky start gave Robert a lot to do, but a terrific run from the eighth tee till coming off the fourteenth green of level par brought Robert back into contention and he would eventually finish with two nice pars for a net 68. Graham McIntyre, off ten, was out in six over. A great back nine of thirty six resulted in a net 67. Whilst everyone in the section was battling away, Mark James was absolutely blowing the field away with a terrific front nine. Playing off thirteen, Mark raced to the turn in one over par and had two birdies en route. With the self appointed M and H now looking like Jim Farry, with an onion head, having allowed Mark to slip under his radar, Mark reverted to normal and came back in forty one for a still excellent net 64.
The first section was graced with some strong scoring. Peter Gallagher, attempting to put the wind up Challenge Cup opponent, Eck, had one of his best front nines for a few years. Finishing with a five for a thirty seven out, will have disappointed PG. The 'loop' would cost Peter three dropped shots, but a bogey at fourteen was eradicated with a good birdie at fifteen. Peter easily handled the last hole, having previously paced it out during the Winter and would be happy with a net 67. Big Eck was unimpressed and was quoted as saying that history has habit of repeating itself.
Starting four, three, two was a good start sequence from Past Captain Charlie Paul. A double bogey at four would be followed by a birdie at five and Charlie would get to the turn in thirty six blows. The highlight of Charlie's round was another birdie at seventeen to give him four on the day and a net sixty six. Suggestions of game improving substances were fuelled by the appearance of a black beemer in the past captains slot and a holiday booked to Amsterdam
The green jacket will be a bit too short for the winner of the section and also the scratch prize.Youngster Steven Mullan, playing off five, had a particular steady round of seventy blows and will surely reduce his handicap substantially over the coming months.
In the footie #2, we lost Jim Elliott and are left with John McQuillan and Duncan Cameron along with the people's choice (or more like the People's Friend!) Jim Long.

Saturday Sweepstake - 2 April 2011
With the weather doing a Goodwillie and sending the head greenkeeper the wrong way, we were unexpectedly presented with superb overhead conditions on Saturday and this was reflected in some excellent scoring. The turnout of almost 140 would eventually manifest in a leaderboard which looked like the Seniors' Open. In section three, Big Tam McGhie, who is always the bridesmaid to pal Matt Stewart as regards team selection, demonstrated what a winter of practice can achieve with a neat net 66. Jackie Norman joined Tam with his own 66 which included a wee double digit disaster at the fifth, which Jackie shrugged off admirably. However, the winner of the group was par 3 specialist, Stephen Wilkie. Stephen has threatened a real good score since being turned back from Oz by the Munchkins and will be chuffed with a net 64 which included four sixes and five fives and no twos.
Section two witnessed a landmark event where Ian Wright was on the first tee only a few minutes late! Seems he had forgot to move his clock last weekend. Anyway, the extra time allowed former butcher Ian to carve up a net 69 for third place. Steady Stewart Munro made second position his own with a net 67. The winner of the section was best pal of the third section winner in Joe Mitchell. Self employed painter Joe, whose rather interesting company motto is "If you want yer granny robbed, I'm yer man", started the season by brushing in his inaugural putt for a birdie on the first. A poor six at the ninth took the gloss off his outward half of 38. His back nine started with a three over par on the tenth followed by a par on eleven. Steady golf followed, until he got a regulation two at 16. Finishing with two fives papered over the cracks which were starting to appear in his game. However, Joe ended up with a great net 66. Such is the fickleness of golf, but Joe played a Challenge Cup prelim match on Sunday morning and lost a match to John Stark, having been four up at one point. Ex winners of this competition are just too foxy and wily to be impressed by strokeplay scores. John did not even need to call on the old "mobile phone going off in mid backswing" ploy, to get through.
Section one runner up was incoming captain, JHD. Free parking and a slot in the Tri Am was all that was required to secure Jim's services for the next year or so. Sixty five year old Jim shot a great net 65, but could not match what might end up one of the best scores of the year which was produced by Ian McDermid. Ian, the Charlie Sheen of Greenock, must have come extremely close to shooting an age which is a closely guarded secret. Being only one over par for each half, is terrific stuff on greens which are obviously not at their best at this time of year.
The scratch prize was won by Paul Mitchell who also had a seventy, like Ian, but won on the countback. Starting off his back nine with a birdie, Paul parred the remaining eight holes. Super stuff. The Wednesday competitions start this week.

4 Man Team Strokeplay 26 March 2011
With some fantastic weather and the greens having been hand cut the previous day, Greenock GC was looking marvellous for the time of the year on Saturday. A particularly tough format gave most teams a bit of a headache. However, the winning team held their nerve and blew the field away.
Dave Heron, Robert Johnstone, Steve Watt and Paul Mitchell were the most consistent team of the day to clean up the sweep money.
On Sunday, the M & H Convenor used some good old fashioned selection processes to field a five man team against local centenarians, Whinhill GC, in the Mail on Sunday. We had a tremendous run in this competition last year, but that team has grown too old and new faces were drafted in. With four of the team taking the Saturday off in order to avoid injuries, we saw first time representative, Andy Gunn, losing his first 7 holes, but clawing it back to lose the first match. Peter Gallagher, Paul McAulay, Steven Lapsley and Alex McGregor justified their selections and can look forward to a game in the next round.
We also had the old firm, sorry, the in firm, team of Jimmy McAulay and Frankie Bhoy Molloy taking on the Whinny in the Daily Mail Foursomes. In a hard fought match against stubborn opponents, our players won two and one.
Well done to all players.
This Saturday sees the start of the season proper and we can dispense with mats and moving balls into the rough, but please remember that preferred lies will be in operation.

Texas Scramble - Saturday 19 March 2011
Each and every week that there is a competition, there is a highlite to write about. From early on, the team of Donnachie, Lyden, Gallacher and McCloy recorded a fantastic 55.6, where they had 3 twos in the back nine allied to birdies at 12 and 15 for a back nine of 28. However, this proved to be a bit short of the winning score and means that Nicol will have to go back to the drawing board and improve upon his practice regime!
Old hands of John Burns, Stuart Alexander, Steven Gordon and John Leslie, who was standing in for the sleeping policeman, got off to a flier with 4 birdies in the first five holes. Eventually this group would record an unbelievable 10 birdies in their round of 58. It is difficult to imagine that they may have left anything out on the course to improve this score.
Having thought they might have scooped the first prize, they did not take into account the youngest team of the day demonstrating what the future might hold for the club. A blistering start of 6 under par over the first six holes included a hole in one at the third from Gary Caldwell. Surely Gareth is the best golfing Caldwell, presently at the club?
Eventually their score would be improved by a couple of birdies on the back nine, particularly crucial being the one at the last which meant an overall tie for first place.
Can I remind members that the competition this Saturday will be a four man team event, where a ballot will take place to finalise the teams.
As regards the Winter League Masters team, I currently have eleven players and am only looking for one more to make up a dirty dozen. I do have Where's Freddie Lungberg? in reserve in event of an emergency, as he is not doing anything just now.
Finally, this time next week I shall be making the draw for this year's Challenge Cup and Captain's Foursomes. Please put your name down on the entry sheets if you wish to be included.
