Reid Rose Bowl - Sat 30 May 2010

Historically, last Saturday should have been the biggest turnout of the year. However, quite conveniently, and obviously for his own advantage, the self appointed M & H scheduled the Reid Rose Bowl qualifying for an English bank holiday weekend which coincided with both early morning Winter Leagues and the Brendan Harley rebels all having outings on the day before and would be suffering the anticipated ill effects.Surely he would coast into the matchplay with all these guys being unavailable? Incredibly, somehow or other, 154 members sneaked up and played.

Again, and for the fourth time this season, the CSS dropped to 68.This cannot happen without the course being in tip top condition. It turned out that a 66 or better was required to qualify and there will be a playoff next Saturday for the remaining place.

In the first round we have Hughie Lyden up against Andy Cuthbert. With both having shot net 66, there is no difference in form, so I go for Andy, who, if he has inherited any of Willie's incredible stamina, will make it past the roadrunner. Beep! Beep!

Alan Rodgers will need to see the winner of the playoff between Billy Dixon, Jim Long, Ian Jamieson and Iain Duncan, but will be too much even for a combination of all four.

Laurence Taylor, who is the blackadder's son in law, will be up against the Scott 'the power' Hunter. Advice and coaching from Eric will not be enough for Laurence.

Trained to peak better than any of Henry Cecil's superstar thoroughbreds, it was no surprise to see Donald Petrie comfortably qualify for this year's Reid Rose Bowl. This is the second year in a row Donald has reached this stage but, I feel Ali Roy will provide the shock of the round by progressing.

John McQuillan versus Frank Molloy. A hard one to call, but will take Neil Lennon's advice and go for John.

The ever popular Dugald Carmichael, who everyone seemed to want to be with in round one, is up against the returning Davie Dougans. Davie is also progressing strongly in the Challenge Cup, and it is appropriate that last Saturday was the birthday of Dr Joseph Guillotine, born in 1738. Davie can get ready for the chop if he goes much further in both competitions. Sorry Dugald, Davie to get through.

Steven Orr against previous winner Peter Gallagher. Peter is also focussed on the Challenge Cup and is incapable of competing on two fronts. Steven to sail through.

Captain Charlie Paul is up against Michael O'Neil and is giving away 15 shots, which will be too much for him.

On Sunday the club hosted the annual Tennent Trophy. There were a number of visitors from all around the globe for this International event. The sponsors from Tennents and also a good few others who had never played our course absolutely raved about it. Hopefully they will spread the word. Unfortunately the group of Americans thought the layout was superb but the greens were far too slow by their standards. Unbelievable!

A terrific turnout saw the best ever scoring for any fourball competition in the club. Coming in with a net 58 was Pat Tinney and Raymond Barr (who had four birdies), only to discover that Steven Lapsley and his partner Jeremiah Hart from Old Ranfurly, had pipped them with a net 57. Big J started with 2 net twos to launch their round.
Thanks go to Charlie Marner, Stan Austin, Jim Duncan and the Mauler for their considerable help on the day. Kevin Campbell, our pro, also helped to make this event run very smoothly. Kevin's raffle prize of a fourball to Gleddoch was won by the Kaiser himself, Jim Long.

Provost Trophy - 22 May 2010

Provost Trophy Full Results

Provost Trophy Draw

Incredidibly Saturday saw one third of the season gone and it will soon be Winter. A huge entry turned up to compete in the Provost Trophy quailifying. Some members must have thought it was a tribute to the former provost of another city and took performance affecting substances when marking out their cards. Disqualification was the order of the day, unfortunately. The final cut off score was the usual 64 where the only real hard luck story was from Gordon Leith and Ross McWilliams who finished with three net bogeys. Peter Gallagher cannot complain about Jimmy McAulay not helping, as Peter only contributed to the one hole, the seventeenth, and that was with a bogey. A par would have got them into the draw.

The first team out the hat was actually the winning pair of Steven Gordon and the sleeping policeman, who shot a net 60. However the top tie of the round will be won by Mark Scanlan and Steven Mullan.

No one has ever won the Provost three times, so Kenny Roy and Cameron McLellan will be hoping to go all the way and should progress against a polis and a lawyer.

Strangely, the third match actually made a request that they play each other. Rab McLaughlin and the anti social convenor are up against another pair who are going for a three times win. If he can avoid suspension, then Simon and Graeme will easily go through.

Jim Maxwell demonstrated what he was made of, by losing his recent Challenge Cup tie from a position of four up. So him and Davie Docherty will find on form Jim Fleming and Derek Leitch too tough.

In the less attractive bottom half we have the battle of the brothers. Hopefully recovering from a shock defeat to Peter, Gordon and Ronnie Parker will take out the other brothers in Chalkie and Frank.

Stewarts Reid and Matt had an incredible back nine of 27 and will be burnt out. Favourites for the trophy, Scott Forrest and Tom McLoughlin to easily come through.

Steven McCafferty and Stevie Wilkie against David Barr and Stewart Munro. This is actually a tie between Steven versus David and I take David's length and shots to get them into the quarters.

Transport entrepreneurs Raymond and Jim will be told to get on their bus by Jim Duncan and Alan Rodgers.

May Medal & Belhaven Qualifier

Having watched a similar, great, sporting administrator,in Lord Treisman, being forced to leave his post following some, probably warranted, loose remarks made about others, it is with great care that this blog is penned.

Again, and it is worth repeating, we have had many favourable reports coming back from players who have represented the club in away fixtures, notably the seniors, that our course is quite a long way ahead of neighbouring courses in terms of quality of greens and general presentation. Well done to the staff and a pat on the back for the members who have responded to the cry for repairing pitchmarks.

The May medal and Belhaven qualifier saw another superb turnout of 165 members and competition was fierce for the right to represent the club. Another interesting aspect of Saturday was the number of players still in the Challenge Cup who fought their way round to good scores. This is something which was never levelled against the self annointed M & H.

Having bragged for a few weeks that he was on the cusp of a particularly good score, the Lord of the Splash returned a gross ninety one for actually his poorest round of the year. We shall put it down to the fact that he was left devastated, when he turned up to discover that his long-standing playing companion had disappeared under the witness protection programme and may never be seen again.

In section two, in particular, we had a number of players who will feel they missed out on good chances to considerably improve their handicaps. Strangely a number of 11 /12 handicappers used up around half their handicaps over just three or four holes. David Docherty dropped six shots over 6,7,8, & 9 for a 69. Robert McLeod had a run of 6,5,6,4 for his last four holes in scoring a 68. Alan Currie and Pat Tinney both stumbled round the loop in five over for a 68 and Kevin Murphy took six shots from his handicap over the same holes, again for a 68.

Securing second spot in section two was Roger McKirdy. Fresh from taking out one of 'Los Galacticos' in the Challenge Cup, Donald also dropped five shots in the loop, but held on for a net 66. The overwhelming medal winner was Gordy Parker. Gordy, who has been sailing close to the wind recently, survived a careful study of his scorecard which did not reveal any legitimate cause for disqualification, so his result stands. A superb front nine of 36 was added to a back nine of 39 for a net 63. Gordy puts his recent terrific run down to encouraging his wife to take up the game. A rather extreme move in my opinion!

The section three combatants (not a good term if you are a member of some posher clubs upcounty, allegedly.) of George Anderson and Jackie Norman just missed out by a single shot from Gordy's brother Murdo, who scored a net 68 with a finish of 7,5,7.

Section one saw Peter Gallagher, who will be delighted to see Challenge Cup opponent, Gordy, losing a few strokes, coming in second with a 66. Taking the spoon with his own 66 was Stephen McCafferty. Stephen will join Gordy in representing the club at the Belhaven qualifier in mid August. The scratch prize was taken by Paul McFarlane from Craig Thomson on the countback. Craig's praying on Saturday afternoon made no difference.

It would be appreciated if those who have their names on the entry sheet for the upcoming Tennent Trophy put their entry monies in the secretary's box or leave behing the bar or in the pro shop. There are a number of other members who are willing to do just that, but are blocked from the sheet by offenders. This year, absolutely definitely and starting on Monday night, names will be removed if there is no entry fee of £12 per team received.

Sat 8 May 2010 - Spring Meeting & April Medal

Waking up thinking it was the Reid Rose Bowl Qualifier, the self appointed M & H convenor donned his Jack Sparrow costume and dropped in a 75 less 12 for a net 63. What a blunder, but, no doubt, he still has at least another one of these up his sleeve.

Anyway, a regulation par at the first was followed by a putt from off the back of the second for a birdie. Poor four at the third. Blocked out at the left of the fourth fairway meant a six was run up. Unable to get onto the green at five in regulation resulted in another six. Easy par at the sixth. Tremendous tee shot at seven was not matched by a poor putt for birdie from close range.Bogey at nine totalled 39 out. Long range putt at ten from almost off green at left hand side ensures some cash and neutralises usual bogey to come at eleven. Missed green to right of twelve and putts up and holes six footer for par. Normal four at thirteen. Comfortable par at fourteen is followed by poor approach to fifteen which means a bogey. Seven iron above hole at sixteen presents long range two putt. Extremely poor tee shot (first of the day) is followed by a terrible six iron for safety and then wedge is still not on the green. Excellent putt from ten yards off green is stone dead. Good drive at eighteen means trusty seven wood is called into play, but almost puts ball into Thomson's bunker. Superb chip to ten feet is followed up by lovely putt. Best ever score is equalled. Three quid secured from PC Glen.

There were another 173 members making up the numbers on a day where the greenstaff used their prerogative to delay the start of play. This time for what they assumed was a light dusting of volcanic ash on the greens. Jonny is sorely missed already.

Taking second place in section two with a 64 was Glenn Greenan who continues excellent form and is a credit to new professional Kevin's teaching skills. Davie Jamieson was the best of the stragglers with a net 67.

The scratch score was secured by Amazonian Stu. Previous Lyle Medal winner, Stu, will reflect on a five at the seventh as his only poor hole. In second place was Gerry Donnachie. Having been selected for the Newton Shield team (kit boy, probably) Gerry has driven his handicap down to four for the first time. However, three dropped shots around the loop would suggest a major frailty in his game. Might be the fact he faces the wrong way. After his sabbatical of last year, Paul Mitchell is making his mark again and returned a net 66. With so many good scores, the CSS dropped to a 68.

In section three we had net 67s from Jim Fleming. Maybe the sweep money might entice Jim to invest in a jumper which is not blue. Sure Kevin has other colours in the shop. Ben McGhee had a steady round to equal the 67, but John Ruddy (surely not the Motherwell goalie who has been throwing the ball instead of catching it?) had his best ever score in an eighty three.

Wed 5 May 2010 - Sweepstake

Every competition throws up interesting statistics. On Wednesday we had three twos from Stuart Alexander, which comes close to the record of four in one round, which unbelievably is held by the self appointed M & H convenor. It is a fact that he also birdied the fifth on that particular day and still missed the buffer. Draw your own conclusions.
Tremendous scoring in section one from Mark Scanlan who finished with two fives for a 68 and Alex Roy who is on a real streak just now with another 69. The stress levels of last year's captaincy have gone and Alex's only worry just now is how to get into the Past Captains car park spot. Not much of a challenge there. I believe.

Following on from last year's Challenge Cup victory, the Great White Hope, has not missed a beat. His 75 less 10 cleaned up in section two and his highlite was a two at the sixth. Davie is still marching on for a defence of his title. Ged Bell, having sobered up from celebrations the previous night had a creditable net 67 along with Jim Harkness. The Lord of the Splash narrowly missed out on a financial return with a 68.

The major talking point in section three was a two at the fifteenth from Bill Jamieson. Bill, you remember, has his own personal psychiatrist marking his card and when the card was studied, the M & H thought he was going daft!
The winner of section three was new member Ian Moore who shot 87 less 23 for a 64. Well done uncle Ian!
With it being an odd week Joe Mitchell got a two.

Sat 1 May 2010 - Oct 2009 Medal

With it being a holiday weekend we had a terrific turnout of 180. When this occurs, slow play is inevitable and there were reports of many rounds of over 4 hours. Having spent Friday at the Kintyre course, along with Jazz Orr, frontrunner Eck was obviously still suffering from the ill effects of a final hole capitulation and could not drag the field along at the required pace. PLEASE do not ask either of these bottle merchants for a synopsis of their game.
The competition on Saturday was the October medal of 2009 and it took a lot of organising to arrange the October 2009 weather to go along with it.

However, David Barr managed a magnificent round of 72, overcoming a wobble of dropping two shots over 6 and 7.
What a week it has been for Alan Young. Tremendous scoring in his match for the seniors against Largs, collects the scratch prize as a section 2 player which has never been done with such a large field before and turfs pal Jim Kerr out the Challenge Cup. Alan only needs to buy a round to cap off a memorable seven days.

As regards the seniors match, it has been pointed out that the following occured
Ian McDermid & Harry McLean         lost
Raymond Barr & Murdo Parker         lost
Ian McFadyen &  Kenny Gilmour      lost
Dave Terrey & Syd Durk                won
Alan Young & Brian Wallace           won
Jim Sutherland & Joe Bryant           won

Largs had sent their strongest team but we still fancied ourselves. So after game 3 we were looking at a humiliating defeat. However a magnificent strong performance from our final 3 games salvaged a draw and 1 point. Largs gaining an away draw scored 2 points.

The entry sheet has been posted for the Tennent Trophy. Entry is £12 per team and it would be expected that anyone who appends his name will pay the entry prior to the day. There may be other members willing to do both. Expect your name to be removed if the entry is not received, sorry.

Wednesday 28 April 2010 - Wed Medal

In quite difficult and windy conditions, with the 16th in particular playing extremely tough, where only the most gifted could actually reach the green, we were again presented with a couple of marvelous scores. Alan Young, who missed the wind by keeping under it, had a 72 less 10 and Craig Love recorded his best ever round with a 73 less 11. Jim Kerrigan, otherwise known as Ian's brother, managed to mar a terrific round by taking a 7 at the last, but still managed a net 64.

Incredibly we now have had 3 holes in one this year. Alan Currie, fresh from a victory over the anti social convenor, probably had a dream that he would get a first ever at the 13th. Well done, Alan.

Saturday 24 April 2010 - The Navy Cup Greensome

The Navy Cup greensomes is one of those fixtures on the calendar which causes much angst amongst the membership. Having cojoined with a particular member in the dark and distant past due to some set of circumstances which neither player can recall and with generally unsuccessful results, members are left seemingly stuck with each other for ever, with neither having the nerve to ask for a divorce.

Along comes the Navy Cup and miraculously the two names somehow appear on the entry sheet, with the much superior player deciding to go along with it this year, but will make the break next year. 365 days later they will get in touch with said partner and lie to them that they are unavailable due to injury, illness, need to go into work, going on holiday etc, etc in the hope that the poor guy can get a replacement who will be lumbered with him for years to come and thus open up the field for a better choice of running mate. You know who you are!

Lets take a look at some of teams and how they performed and mentally speculate on what went wrong.
Nicol, a determined competitor, partnered Kenny Piper. Kenny was possibly a bit inhibited as they were joined by a pair of markers, so was understandably flustered when playing his own resultant tee shot going down the ninth. Disqualification was the result.

Bill Jamieson and Roger Sykes? Was this some sort of strange therapy recommended by the good doctor for absolute lost causes? A round with your clinician?

Then there is the so called Marmite team of Gordon McFarlane and Robert McLeod? How did this one originate? Is Gordon a representative for an obscure charity?

Normally when a player joins that last great sporting dictator (with the demise of Juan Antonio Samaranch) that is the so called M & H convenor, you would not expect the past Challenge Cup winner to continually miss putt after putt from close in. Taxi for Morry Glen!

How about Lapsley & McDaid? They probably deserve each other,as the recriminations in Blair's Folly around 4:30 on Saturday evening were flying around and the blame word was being bandied about, as yet another chance of a trophy was thrown away by the other person's errors.

An M & H prediction of a winning score of 63 was blown away by the two runners up. A 62 will generally be more than enough, but David Carney and Jake McQuillan and Mark Cannon and Caesar Long (well, he is never away from the forum) were left in the slipsteam of a tremendous 60 by first time trophy winners John Leith and Don Shields. Don was an unlucky runner up by virtue of countback in last week's Crawford Bogey, so is on form. 38, 37 minus 15 is certainly impressive.

Salutations must go to Mark Taylor, Davie Bruce and Alan Currie. Their efforts will mean the anto social convenor has a bit more time to concentrate on the darts.

Saturday 21 April 2010 - Willow Trophy

By an overwhelming majority, the 2's format will remain the same until further notice. It is actually quite good being able to conduct a poll amongst so many members, as we get a more accurate feel as to the opinion of the silent majority.

'Television in the lounge on a golfing day' might be the next one conducted.

On Wednesday we witnessed some incredible scoring in the first round of the Willow Trophy. Over 130 took part and if you did not score a net 66 or better, then you can almost forget about looking at the sweepstake results. Of the nine sweepstake winners, we had a 64 from Jim Kerr (looking to catch up on Jim Fulton), five net 65s, a 66 and a 67. There were others unlucky to be pipped on the countback. This will make this particular competition very competitive for the remaining rounds.

The most notable round came from Alistair Roy. Venturing out for the first time on his chariot, along with batman Simon, Al whizzed round in 67 strokes. A really consistent round which had a highlite of a three at the eleventh, which is not as difficult as it seems, as big brother Alex has been out with the petrol again this year and burnt down the only hazard on the hole. He must have misjudged the amount required as there is still some gorse remaining. Young Andy Roy also shot net 65 and Alex himself had a great round. Looks as though Kenny was not allowed out to play.

Saturday 17 April 2010 - Crawford Bogey

The signs of a recovery in playing numbers are there for all to see. 140 on Wednesday and 160 on Saturday are better than for any week last year.

Robin Goodall continues a real terrific run of form. With a 9,4,2,5,10 start most players would have thrown the towel in. Even trying to add that lot up is difficult. However, Robin fought on and recorded a net 67, which, when applied to an effective net 68 for the Crawford Bogey sees his handicap come down by over 3 strokes. Retirement must be the answer. Although this does not seem to apply to the anti social convenor.

Steven Gordon always seems to record at least one particularly good score in a season, and, with the weather being so kind, he dropped in a tremendous gross 69 which brought his handicap down to 4. Rugby ref Knoxy must have been on the coke when he came in with a net 66. Never one to let the grass grow under his feet, Jim Fulton, our handicap seniors champion, will be hugely disappointed to finish 5,6 for a gross 73, but he will be pleased that this score takes him to the top of the pile that is Young, Kerr and Barr as regards handicap. Davie Arnott is another to watch this year, and he hammered his way round to a best ever 75 less 10, nailing a huge number of putts into the bargain.

The Crawford Bogey is never the most popular format, but it is the first trophy available to the members in the year and, as is usual, was hard fought. Donny, Pat Tinney and Ian Doak all had chances to secure a slot at the prizegiving, but just fell short with creditable scores of two up. Past club champion,Cammy McLellan, playing off an amazing 5, had a scratch 72 which converted to being one up. He is another who will consider himself unlucky.
However, for the third year in a row, the destination of the trophy was decided by a countback. Don Shields and Glenn Greenan both finished 3 up on the course. With a 1 up front nine, followed by a 2 up back nine, Glenn takes the silverware with a better inward half, which was only 4 over par. Well done to Glenn in his first ever success at the club.

There has been a not too surprising first round casualty in the Challenge Cup. 2003 winner, John Houston, having arrived back at the club after a sabbatical at the less competitive Kilmacolm GC, did not have the necessary match sharpness against Stevie McCafferty and crashed out. A whitewash of the other past winners might just be on the cards and Marco Imponenti, Kenny Gilmour, Andy Gunn, Duncan Anderson and Paul McAulay are all in huge danger of a trip into the Inter Toto.

Sunday 11 April 2010 - Winter League Masters Trophy

US Masters Sunday saw the inaugural Winter League Masters Trophy - a Ryder Cup style match involving all our winter leagues and a Rest of the World team. The idea developed last year after two of our winter leagues arranged a challenge match. The idea to have a match for all the leagues was put up as a forum topic and was well received with a lot of good ideas being pulled together to form the basis for the inauguaral match.

Talk about a lucky break, the weather on Sunday was 5 degrees above normal and what a day it turned out. The course had dried out just in time following a fortnight of heavy rain and all competitors turned up on time giving us a field of 96 players in 8 teams of 12 players to play for our new Masters Team Trophy which was a shotgun start with 4 players on all holes on both 9 & 18 hole courses. So a great start. For many it was their first opportunity to play as part of a large team in competitive play and to take part in a shotgun start at Greenock, this novelty factor helped make the competition a success.

Each team nominated a team captain to pick a team of 12, select pairings for the big course and 4 steady singles players for the 9 hole course. Its not all sunshine and roses for the team captain, however, as Robert Leith, team captain for the Sunday League found out when his team won the Wooden Spoon. Poor Robert has been circulating amongst his team and thought they were in with a shout as winners. He was genuinely in shock when his team was anounced as wooden spoon winners. There followed a parting of the ways in the crowded Lounge to let Robert step up to accept the wooden spoon trophy (Made expertly by member Ian S Duncan). Funnily enough none of his team stepped forward to accompany him on the long walk of shame and he was subjected to a loud and unprecedented reaction form the rest of room to congratulate him on his team performance. His face was a picture to behold and this was the truly memorable moment of the day. Not a good incentive for me getting team captains next year though....

Notable incidents on the day included George falling flat on his backside as he left the 6th tee which for some reason those at the prizegiving found funny. Dave McFarlane popped up to the club during the day and was upset at us hogging both courses from 12 noon to 4:30 when he wanted to practice. This was brought to the attention of those at the prizegiving and they all agreed that this was unfortunate and apologised for any inconvenience....at least I think that's what they meant by their reaction.

Another notable on the day was Stevie McDowal winning the free years membership which was drawn by bar staff after the prizegiving.

Runaway winners on the day were Billy Dixon's team, The League of Extrardinary Gentlemen and Eejits, who won the fantastic new trophy sponsored by Surridge Sports (Thanks to Alec Cloudsley) convincingly by 10 points clear of the nearest team. As you would expect, Billy accepted the Trophy with humility and respect for the other teams and wished them well for next year................Aye right. Billy gave the other teams both barrels as only he can to chants of "SUBOOO, SUBOOO, SUBOOO".......I suppose he did look a bit like Susan Boyle with his hair all messed up.

Looks as though the match was a success and should run next year. We'll invite feedback on the format on the forum but points already mentioned were that the 4 ball on the big course should have 3/4 handicap allowance rather than full handicap. Prizes for best individual scores on both courses would be another worthwhile addition. A few members said they'd have happily put up bottles to help with the budget as we went over a bit on costs.

Pictures of all games on the course were captured by roving reporter Jim McAuley, see them here...

Saturday 10 April - March Medal - CSS 69

Being hugely inspired by events at Augusta National, the M & H convenor decided it was time to change his ways. Therefore, turning up on Saturday, he decided that, no more would he spit into the hole on completion of his putting, he would respect other players around him, would be polite and acknowledge all his admirers and he would converse eloquently and intelligently with his partners (although Tiger had a better chance with some Korean guy than GD did when trying it with Bryceland and McGill. That one might just be too much of a challenge!). "What an absolutely boring day" he was heard to grumble on the way home.

As always there is always some guy pleading for a place in the team. This week it was not exactly the longest hitter in the club in Stevie Wilkie. So, politely, nicely, respectfully and intelligently, the M & H let him down gently by suggesting he would be better off going for an audition on telly, as he heard they were looking for a new Dorothy. He could get himself back to OZ.

It was an incredible crowd who turned up on Saturday and the anti social convenor's gang hut was absolutely jam packed with what appeared to be the whole population of Dingwall! I suppose if you get in for £150 less than the going rate, the journey is not so bad.

180 souls took advantage of excellent weather to take part in the March Medal? Perhaps a calendar for the so-called M & H convenor would be appropriate. We look forward to the return of five hour rounds.

Section 1 saw John Burns, who is a genuine 4 handicapper, using his five strokes to clean up the scratch medal with a terrific 70, which included a 4,3,4,3 finish. John McQuillan attained the handicap medal with a great net 66. David Carney justifies the team selector's faith with another good early season performance.

Section 2 had Jamie McEwan, who the author does not really know but will obviously require investigating, managing to rattle off 9 pars and a birdie en route to a 77 less 12. The blanket like greens were no deterent to Jamie.
Evergreen (and who would ever want to admit that just now) Jim Gallagher has latched on to the coat tails of Docherty and Gracie in recent weeks, so it is nice to see Jim breaking 80, for a 67, which just pipped Haggis by a single stroke.

In section 3, Roger Sykes and Donald Petrie who each had a net 69 were pipped to the medal by Robin Goodall. Robin's pre match routine of driving up from 'Doon the watter' at around 4am has finally paid off. Consistent scoring of nine sixes and four fives sees Robin qualify for the end of year bash that is the Kinnaird Trophy.

Congratulations go to Rab McLaughlin for achieving a hole in one at the 16th. Generously, Rab, produced two bottles on Sunday for the players in the Winter League Challenge. Well Done. Better than that, though, was Jim Duncan who got a memorable 2 at the same hole and took away forty quid.

Sunday saw the inaugural Winter Challenge. Charlie will probably compose a wee report, so all I will say is well done to Charlie, assisted by Moira, Cathy and Badder Marner. Unfortunately there needs to be winners and losers, and, unfortunately, we all know who won. However, the real winner was the club itself. It was great to see the clubhouse filled to the rafters on a Sunday without any sign of a Christening cake.

Wednesday 7 April - Sweepstake

The results sheet looks almost the same as last Saturday. Jim Fleming, as predicted, and Jim Docherty are on a terrific run of form just now and are cleaning up. An impressive 80 players took part in the competition, foregoing the grand final of Masterchef.

Could everyone please be aware that the computer is actually functioning and scores should be entered and accepted into the computer. A huge number of players did not do this on Wednesday. Thanks in advance for you assistance in this.

An update on the Status Quo vs Change as regards the twos. Currently, I have received 26 responses, with only five in favour of change. Please keep your thoughts coming and I will run the survey until the end of next week.
