Sat 18 Sept

As has been the case in a huge number of competitions and ties this year, the last available 'Major' went down to the wire. The Lyle Medal was concluded on Saturday and there were a whole raft of players in contention. The favourite was probably Stuart Gallacher, who had a 61 backed up by a 71 for 132. Stuart did not play on Saturday and awaited the outcome from up the Amazon. Finishing up on 135 were three players who can look back on a number of missed opportunities.

Dave Terrey had a terrific run to the turn of level par and was actually only two over for fourteen holes. He finished with a seven at fifteen followed by bogeys at seventeen and eighteen. Alistair Livingstone also finished on 135 and he will regret 8 dropped shots from eleven thru fourteen. John Ellis ran up a host of sixes for his 135. Paolo Spella, starting out with a 64, was so shocked at being waved thru by pacemaker and frontrunner, Eck, his game went to pieces and returned a 70. Pat Tinney could not improve on earlier rounds and returned a 133.

Charlie McDowell, with a 63 starting out, dropped five shots around the loop, before steady play over the last six holes secured a net 69, which put him level with Stuart. Coming in under the radar was Mark Cannon. Mark's scores have been very steady this year and he had started out on 132, having previously shot 64 and 68. With a poor six at the ninth, mark was out in 40. However, a back nine of only two over par meant that he returned another net 68, which was no improvement on his 132. We now had three players on this score.

The rules suggest that their third scores are used to seperate them. With past Lyle Medal winner Stuart not playing, he was automatically eliminated. Charlie McDowell has recorded an excellent 70 for his tie break round, but the winner of the Lyle Medal by virtue of a net 68 is Mark Cannon, who wins his first major at the club.
With the last places up for grabs in the Medals Finals, other members had something to play for. Not having won a scratch medal this year, Anthony Worrall Thomson shot a superb 68 to qualify. Stevie MacDonald may have the achievement of the week, with a one under par run of holes from the seventh.Brilliant.

In section two, David Robertson, who seems to be following his mentor, Ian Doak, in putting the non existent handicapping abililities of the self appointed M & H into the spotlight. Davie had a consistent 81 to win the medal.
Old sea dog, Joe Ball, makes a return, after many a year, into the winners enclosure. His eighteen hole scores of 56.3, 66.5, 47.5, 75.6, 34.5 and 35.4 look more like the cost of some wee trips on Cally Mac.

Congratulations go to John Burns who had a Hole in One at the 16th. In customary fashion, a bottle was produced for all in attendance to enjoy. Never have the clientele of the Willow been so pleased!

With an anticipated downturn in playing numbers for the Wednesday competitions, which will run right thru to the last week in October, we will go to two sweepstake sections of 0 - 12 and 13 - 28. The twos will remain the same categories as there may be rollovers.

Finals Day Sunday 12 September 2010

Sunday saw the conclusion of this year's matchplay competitions and the players were blessed with excellent conditions. The course was in terrific shape considering the rain which fell on the previous day and also the time of the year. No excuses on either of these fronts from the finalists.

First match out saw holder, Davie Heron, take on Alex Roy, playing in his second ever final, in the Challenge Cup. Receiving five shots and having put together an amazing run of victories over the past two season, Davie was considered the slight favourite. He justified this accolade by racing to a four up lead at the turn, and he still had a couple of shots to receive. However, with nothing to lose, Alex threw caution to the wind and won the tenth, halved the eleventh and won twelve to be only two down. Alex holed a brave putt on seventeen to make sure the game was all square on the eighteenth tee. Both players comfortably reached the green in two shots. The strees of the campaign may just have finally caught up with Davie, however, as he watched Alex roll his ball up for a gimme four. Davie then proceeded to three putt from a reputed 12 feet or 20 feet, depending on who told the story, to relinquish his title. This was a terrific game and demonstrated matchplay at its best.

In the Challenge Quaich, we had Jim Sweeney, recent Tri Am Trophy winner, against Davie Whiteford. As in a huge number of matches this year, this game also went down to the last couple of holes, and the more experienced player that is Jim kept his nerve and won on the seventeenth. Davie has now been runner up in four competitions in the past two seasons!

The Provost Trophy was fought out between Jim Duncan and Alan Rodgers against florist, Si Harley and Graeme McLellan. This was a more clear cut victory for Jim and Alan against the flower pot men. Astute use of his shots by Jim and steady play from Alan meant a fine scalp was taken to secure the win.

Having met previously in the year, in a round of the Seniors Championship, which went to the thirty sixth hole, Dave Terrey and Duncan Cameron were no strangers. These old timers put on a great show trading holes with each other and eventually finished all square. A decision to play over the first four holes still did not seperate the players, and, with light running out, they are going to play another match.

In the Captains Foursomes we had Stuart Alexander and Iain Jones taking on the past winners in the 'Dream Team' of Morry Glen and George Deveney. Having dispatched their opponents in the semi final,at the first extra hole, only a few hours earlier, Stuart and the sleeping policeman were probably feeling more match sharp. This game reached the turn all square, with no one being more than one up at any time. A catalogue of errors on the tenth would prove crucial in the final analysis, where the Dream Team crashed worse than George Michael and Tiger Woods combined. A lost hole to a four, when a win looked the more likely would drain their confidence later. However, a win up eleven squared the game, and halved holes until the sixteenth tee meant the game was even. A poor tee shot by his partner, although onto the green at sixteen, saw Morry as far away from the hole as possible and the likely three putt was achieved. Iain hit a great six iron into a comfortable position and the novice finalists went one up. An excellent tee shot by Stuart put Jonesy into range of the green with a six iron and he duly delivered. Two good putts would see Stuart and Iain win their first trophy in years.

The competition on Saturday was declared to be cancelled by the green staff and an ad hoc sweep was hastily arranged. There will be no handicap increases for this, but, players who scored better than a sixtynine will have their handicaps reviewed. A competition cannot be played on a 'Reduction Only' basis.

The Autumn Meeting will take place this Saturday, with the Kinnaird Trophy on Saturday October 2.
This years prizegiving will be on Friday October 22. In a change of format, in order to freshen the event up, we have decided not to have the comedian as in the past dozen or so years, but have employed the services of the 'King of the Karaoke' to provide some light hearted entertainment. 'King John' has assured me he has all the favourites you may wish to sing.

The format will be a meal, Presentation of Prizes and then a Karaoke session. I believe this will be a sell out, so anyone wishing to go should let me know as soon as possible. The cost of the night will be £12 per person and members should post their money into the Secretary's box to guarantee their places. Members may also bring along family or friends if they wish.

Wednesday 8 September 2010

As predicted, the final round of the Willow Trophy saw one of the pack putting together a great round. With Graham Knox not playing, Alan Currie took full advantage of the good conditions and shot a trophy-winning net 65. Alan was standing on the 13th tee, knowing that he could only afford to drop one more shot, and covered the last six in five pars and a bogey at 15 to pinch the cup.

Superb scores were recorded of net 64s from Ergate and Cameron McLellan to win their sections. Cammy jumps to the top of the money list, but will be happeir with the handicap continuing to improve.

A number of competitions will reach their conclusion at the weekend, most notably the Lyle Medal and Challenge Cup. There are a whole host of players capable of clawing back the lead which Stuart Gallacher (61) has. Could Alex Roy (66) make it a double 'Major' over just two days? Paolo always wins something every year and is joined on 64 with the Tin Man and the Silent Witness.

65 scorers include Mark McCaig who is putting super scores together every round just now, along with the Lord of the Splash who has threatened to score every week since April, but not really lived up to self predictions. Best to look at the 63s for the real dangers. Self appointed M & H along with another player on form in Charlie McDowell are possibles. Lying in second is John Ellis with a 62. If John has eventually finished his 10K Glasgow run he will be a threat.

On Sunday we see Finals Day where all the matchplay competetions will be finished off  (Unless the M & H has a square game!).

In the final of the Challenge Cup, the holder, Davie Heron, is attempting to be only the second player in history to successfully defend his title (Duncan Gracie). 9 handicapper,Davie has played 16 games, replays included, over the past two seasons without defeat. Alex Roy is in his first final and may find the occasion too much.

The Challenge Quaich has Davie Whiteford, who has been runner up in three trophies over the past two years, playing Jim Sweeney. Jim played great stuff to win the Tri Am  last week and should run out the winner.

The Whinhill Seniors is contested by Duncan Cameron and Dave Terrey. With Dave having the tri am organisation on his mind and a four shot difference, Duncan Cameron might just take the trophy.

Si Harley and Graeme McLellan are looking to be the first ever three times winners of the Provost. Against Jim Duncan and Alan Rodgers this game might be a long drawn out affair. Si and Mac to make history.

With an outstanding semi final of the Captains Foursomes still to be played, it is difficult to make a prediction. However, it does not matter who turns up, the outcome will be the same.

Wednesday 1 September 2010

We had a real grandstand finish to this year's Bennett Cup on Wednesday. With leaders Cameron McLellan and Craig Love unable to play, the road was clear for other contenders to make an attempt to overtake them. The main challenger turned out to be Ross White. Playing with his dad, he witnessed Jim return a terrific net 62 and wished he could do the same. However, needing a net 68 to tie or a 67 to win, Ross was 38 to the turn and in with a real shout. Standing on the fifteenth tee, 8 handicapper Ross was only 4 over par. Bogeys at 15, 16 and 17 meant a par was needed to win the cup and he duly delivered. This means that Ross has now double his haul of trophies (Crawford Bogey 1999) at the club. Well done.

  • Saturday 28 August 2010
  • Gents, another fantastic day for scoring on Saturday. Having started out in the second game, and playing in a sponsored charity event, where every player had to complete 18 holes in five hours, Andy Jamieson returned a terrific season's best 66. Pre match Europa League celebrations from Frank Molloy, scratch 72, and John McEleny, 76, were enough to bhoy them for the day's play and they both returned net 67s (Good year, that).
  • Incidentally, Frank played the roadrunner last week in the final of the Reid Rose Bowl. 2 down with only 3 to play, and Big Shug stroking at two of these holes did not put Frank off, as he finished 2,3,4 to take the competition to a replay.
In section 2, Jim Long will be disappointed to get on the bogey trail, mid round, but still managed to return a net 68 to win the section.

  • Danny Fulton started his round off with a 7 followed by a 6, but managed to gather himself for a net 67.
Wednesday sees the last round of the Wednesday Medal competitions which is the Bennett Cup. There are a whole host of possible winners of this and the weather has promised to be kind.

Wed 25 August 2010

Tremendous scoring yet again on a Wednesday, with the CSS dropping down to 68. Returning from the Algarve where, unlike him, he spent some time practising, Cameron McLellan came back to record an excellent 65 which got him close to equalling the course record. Five birdies were offset by a double bogey on 14 and Cameron now joins Craig 'the gambler' Love as leader of the Bennett Cup on 129. The final round of the Bennett will be next Wednesday and a couple of others will feel they are still in with a shout. Alan Young (62), Charlie Paul (63), William Crawford, Ian Kerrigan, Don Shields, Mark McCaig and Ian Hendry all have 64s. Another highlite of Wednesday was the hole in one by Jamie McEwan at the third.

The sleeping policeman and Stuart Alexander will be pleased to see Captains Foursomes opponents, Ian Doak and David Robertson both recording handicap reducing scores, prior to their forthcoming semi final.

Due to holiday committments, the final of the Reid Rose Bowl takes place this afternoon, and not on Finals Day. The Roadrunner is up against the centenary champion Frank Molloy. Boosted by having taken out Alistair Roy in the semis, a handicap reduction of two strokes already this year, multiple scores within the buffer and also receiving ten shots, it is difficult to make a case against Hughie. Hughie to win by 2 & 1.Beep! beep!

The AM AM on Friday is filling up nicely and we currently have over 80 people who generally would not be around the club on a Friday. Still a few spaces left and the prize fund is substantial, so feel free to put in a team.e a chance. Weather forecast is promising as well.

Saturday 21 August 2010

On Wednesday, we had one of the best net scores of the year from Pat Tinney. As everyone knows, Pat is up at the course quite a lot just now, putting in the hours until well into the night. Having started with a normal bogey at the first, he then birdied 3, 5 and 8 to be 2 under entering the loop. He then had a 6, an unbelievable 7 and then a 5. Back to back birdies at 15 and 16 were followed by two pars. A superb round  of 71 less 10 takes Pat into single figures for the first time and breaks him away from the other leading performers in his section (Alan Currie, Davie Docherty and Graham Knox) who will struggle to catch him now. Basking in his glory, Pat was shocked to hear, just minutes later, that Derek Leitch had also a net 61 from a handicap of 19.

A 63 from Graham Knox was enough to take a one shot lead in the 'Willow', with only one round remaining. This competition is wide open, and, given some decent weather, there are a number of players who might yet win it. Graham is sitting on 128 (63,65), but there are a number with the following single round scores who might fance their chances.

Derek Leitch & Pat Tinney (61), Ricky Hall, Riccardo Di Murro and Alan Currie (62), Holder Archie Wohlgemuth, Stuart Alexander and Jim Harkness all with 63.  The final round is on September 8.

Saturday was the Captain's Trophy. This cup was presented by past captains, back in 1971.

With the weather being consistent all day we saw scores from the first two games and scores from the last two games being the contenders for the prize. Out first was Craig Thomson, whose gross 70 was enough to collect the scratch prize, just pipping Scott Hunter on the countback. Scott also missed out on the best net in section one on the countback, from former Captain's Trophy winner and playing partner Duncan Anderson, who had a season's best of net 64. In the very last game of the day, David Williams, son of Charlie, was delighted to return a net 64, which included a 6 at the seventh and a finish of 5,4,5 which allowed him to collect the prize in section 2.

Out in the second game was Jim Duncan. As a driving instructor,Jim is never known to break any speed limit, and manouvered himself round the course with 81 shots. Jim's round was very consistent and a par at the last secured the trophy. Just as delighted were Graeme McLellan and Simon Harley who await Jim and Alan Rodgers in the final of the Provost.

The AM AM is filling up nicely and the timesheet is attached. The support of those who have elected to play is appreciated.

I have 4 complimentary tickets for this week's European Tour golf at Gleneagles, and, if anyone wishes to go, then please send me an e mail and they can use them. This will be on a first come first served basis.

Championship Final - Sat 31 August 2010

Over the course of Friday evening and 2 rounds on Saturday, the club witnessed the final stages of this year's Championship. An incredible match took place in the first semi final between sibling rivals, Kenny and Alistair Roy. The statistic of 17 halved holes and a single hole win on the fourth summed up how tight this game was, with Kenny being the victor.

In the other match Crawford Rae took on Graeme McLellan, but was overwhelmed by the player on form and Graeme won on the fifteenth green.

This set of results meant that we had two first time finalists turning up on a bleak Saturday morning. It was ironic that they were also the leading two players in the Montford Trophy and they are also the top two players in our order of merit, the Robert Spence Trophy. With each player having taken out a previous champion in Murdie Carmichael and Crawford Rae and both having successes against similar opponents en route to the final, it was almost impossible to predict a winner.

Both players were justifiably nervous about the encounter and, allied to brutal tee placements and pin positions (Donald Trump has contacted the club asking for the services of Jimmy McAulay, in designing his next course at Aberdeen!) and rough weather, it was obvious that pars might be good enough to win holes. An early lead after 3 holes by Graeme was overcome by a birdie at five by Kenny. All square at the turn showed how close this was going to be. However, Graeme managed to get into a two up lead after 16 holes only to lose the seventeenth.

It looked as though Kenny was going to square the match at eighteen, with him being comfortably on the green and Graeme being off the green and miles away from the hole. However, Graeme, using his putter from the wet grass, in a strategy, which the following crowd thought was high risk considering the conditions, knocked his ball stiff and then watched Kenny three put from close range. Graeme polished off a couple of chilli burgers from the gala day barbeque to celebrate a two up lead. With the weather rapidly deteriorating both players were finding the conditions extremely difficult. However, an early birdie from Kenny allied to a tee shot on four which went into the first burn from Graeme saw the match return to all square. A catalogue of errors and poor course management at the sixth meant Kenny was now in the lead for the first time in the final.

We now present a small memento for the shot of the championship and this came at the 27th hole. Graeme, who, by now, was looking to possibly regain his lead, as Kenny was 100yds away in two shots, could only look on as Kenny put a wedge to a couple of inches of the hole to take a one up lead with nine to play. This was a lead which was never relinquished and Kenny eventually closed the match out on the 35th hole, winning the championship by 3 & 1

.

In the Seniors championship, Alan Young took on Jim Gallagher. This was a first time final for both players and they take great credit for the scalps they took out in earlier rounds. Jim, in particular, won games against much lower handicapped players in John Houston and Raymond Barr. Alan had defeated Dave Terrey and Duncan Cameron.

There was a real sense of occasion on the first tee as the crowd were greeted with the presence of PC Martin Kane working the bag of Alan. Rumour has it, that Martin had been promised the 'Tele' would be sending a photographer along.  Jim was unable to find such a high calibre caddy and could only employ the services of son, Peter. The standard of play in the game, itself, was high and the lead changed hands a number of times and it was only through a superb putt on the eighteenth that gave Alan his first ever Seniors Championship.

Wed 28 July 2010 - Championship Update

The quarter finals of the Championship was played this evening. Shrugging off his reputation for being wary of juniors, Crawford Rae turned in a superb performance in his 3 up victory over Robbie Wilkie. Robbie can look forward to the junior final on Saturday.

The secong game was predicted to be a tight fought encounter. However, taking on old adversary Murdie Carmichael, it was Kenny Roy who put his opponent to the sword. At one point he was 4 up and eventually won the match on the fifteenth.

2008 finalist, Alex McGregor was matched against another finalist in Alistair Roy. A pre match routine which involves numerous putts and pitches bore fruit for Al, as he went on to a 7 and 6 win to ensure one of the Rhoy Bhoys will be in this years final.

The form player of the past few weeks is definitely Graeme McLellan. In his quarter final against Andy Jamieson he showed no mercy in closing out the tie 4 and 3.

Friday's semi final lineup sees Graeme play Crawford and the battle of the Roys.
I give up trying to pick a winner as it is too close to call.

Thursday night sees the club compete in the semi final of the County Cup. Representing all of us,away to Cochrane Castle is the following group:

Andy Jamieson, Pat Tinney, Jim Fleming and George Boyd.

PS I am looking for the names of all members, with guests names and clubs who have won the member and guest day.

Championship Draw - Last 8

Last night saw the matchplay stages of the Championship being played out in not the bets of weather, but the games, as usual, provided plenty of drama.

The predictor managed to get 7 out of the 8 results correct, with only the first game, between Simon Middleton and Robbie Wilkie being incorrect. A 2 and 1 win for Robbie proves, yet again, that matches involving juniors should be avoided.

Big John Gunn was also up against previous finalist and junior member, Alex McGregor, and was 2 up coming out of the loop. A bottle was heard to gently break somewhere in the next few holes as John lost out to Alex.
Crawford Rae duly dispatched Steven Lapsley with a 3 and 2 victory.

The top match of the night was between David MacFarlane and Graeme McLellan. Big Mac was never in danger, winning 4 & 3 in a game which was played in record time.

Past captain Alex Roy put together a run of three 3s on the back nine and missed a couple of three footers, but was still up against a favourite in Andy Jamieson. Andy wins by 2 and 1.

Alistair Roy was 1 down to the Mauler on the seventeenth, which he won and then holed a monster birdie putt to take the match 1 up.

Murdie Carmichael, obviously unhappy with the handling of Sunday's junior open, put his second shot at the fourth, straight onto Andy Brands napper, full toss. This actually prevented his ball going into the ditch near the fifth tee, so he just chipped in onto the green and holed the putt. Mark Scanlan put up a terrific show, but lost out 1 down.
Andy Brands will wake up this morning to find out he was defeated 5 & 4 by Kenny Roy.

Wednesday's matches are all finely balanced affairs and will tee off at 5pm and we will see Crawford Rae taking on Robbie Wilkie. Although Crawford is another player with a huge reputation, he is not a big fan of playing against juniors. However, Crawford should progress.

Graeme McLellan will have used up most of his energy in running round the course last night, so Andy Jamieson will make that advantage count in a narrow victory.

Alistair Roy should take advantage of his fortune against the Mauler and come through in a tight tussle with Alex McGregor.

Murdie against Kenny Roy is the most difficult to call. But, now that he is on the march, we go for Muride to pip Kenny.

Attached are the current standings in The Robert Spence and also a wee look at who is the player with the current best 10 net scores.

Worth a real mention is the Seniors championship. Alan Young will take on Jim Gallagher (who has two terrific scalps on his way to the final) in Saturday's 18 hole final. Although the adage is never to dismiss an injured golfer, I believe that Alan will put Jim's groin to the test and win his first championship.

Saturday 24 July 2010 - Club Ch'ship Qualifier Round 2

Championship Draw

Before moving on to the major story we can dispense with the Mail on Sunday, 5 man team saga. Unlike Raymond Domenech, the self appointed M & H done his best to prepare this group, of what actually turned out to be turkeys, in a professional manner. However, like Les Blues, it became apparent very early on, that they were afraid of travelling abroad and the match on Friday turned into a bit of a debacle.

Having been sent to the far east, this representative group returned with a story concocted about opponents who had previously held much lower handicaps and, who now see said handicaps doubled over a couple of years. The same players are also credited with having the ability to play wonder shots of which Louis Oosthuizen is probably incapable. Anyway, a good run has come to a halt and only the selector comes out with any credit.

In the second round of the Championship players were greeted with a course matching the occasion. Traditional Championship pin positions tested the participants, especially at the seventh, where only one two was recorded all day, and that was from course architect Jimmy McAulay. On some of the remaining holes, it was difficult to tell if the pin was actually on the green!

From the previous Saturday, it turned out that the qualifiers for the last 16 matchplay places all came from the top 20 leaders and Frank Molloy was probably the only player to drop out of those leaders and miss out. He said it was due to losing his ball on the third tee, before he played it! There was only one player who made it into the 16 from those who scored more than 77 in the first round and that was only due to Stuart Alexander excluding himself from the matchplay rounds. 3 players had scored 78 in round one and added 75s. Current champion,Craig Thomson and Alan Hulme (who finished 5,5) both missed out on the countback to John Gunn.

In a random draw for the matchplay, we see the following interesting lineup of games.

1) Simon Middleton, recent semi finalist, will play junior member Robbie Wilkie. Robbie is on a fine run of form, but Simon should progress.

2)Steven Lapsley, another multiple semi finalist, will play multiple championship winner Crawford Rae. Crawford to win this one, but it will be very tight.

3)Having scored a superb 65 in round two, and also having avoided a junior, Graeme McLellan will take on David MacFarlane. This might be the year that Graeme makes a real run at the competition, so will go for a Big Mac.

4)Another player who gets to the semi final stages regularly is Alex Roy. However,Andy Jamieson, the real dark horse for the title, will give Alex the time to concentrate on his Challenge Cup campaign. Andy to make the final is my big prediction.

5)John Gunn will line up against recent finalist,Alex McGregor, and discover why the big guns do not like playing juniors. Alex to go through.

6)Two recent finalists will match up. The Mauler will play Ali Roy. This will be a tough game, but I go for al to progress.

7)Andy Brands will be exhausted after running the junior open on Sunday and will have nothing left to offer against Montford Trophy winner, kenny Roy.

8)Young Mark Scanlan is pitted against Murdie Carmichael. A recent sabbatical for the past champion should see him rejuvenated and Murdie will prove he is still the player to beat.

Before a blow is struck I will predict that Andy Jamieson will play Murdie in the final next Saturday!

All these games are really finely balanced and members should consider a trip up to the course on Monday evening to witness some fine golf with players' games being put under stress in their attempts to progress. I am sure they would all really welcome any spectators.

The Sid Montford Trophy was won by Kenny Roy with a two round total of 140, scoring 70 on each qualifying day. Well done Kenny. His nearest rival was Graeme McLellan who was two shots adrift on 142 with rounds of 77, 65.

Kenny receives the Sid Montford trophy form Captain Charlie Paul

Reid Rose Bowl - Sat 30 May 2010

Historically, last Saturday should have been the biggest turnout of the year. However, quite conveniently, and obviously for his own advantage, the self appointed M & H scheduled the Reid Rose Bowl qualifying for an English bank holiday weekend which coincided with both early morning Winter Leagues and the Brendan Harley rebels all having outings on the day before and would be suffering the anticipated ill effects.Surely he would coast into the matchplay with all these guys being unavailable? Incredibly, somehow or other, 154 members sneaked up and played.

Again, and for the fourth time this season, the CSS dropped to 68.This cannot happen without the course being in tip top condition. It turned out that a 66 or better was required to qualify and there will be a playoff next Saturday for the remaining place.

In the first round we have Hughie Lyden up against Andy Cuthbert. With both having shot net 66, there is no difference in form, so I go for Andy, who, if he has inherited any of Willie's incredible stamina, will make it past the roadrunner. Beep! Beep!

Alan Rodgers will need to see the winner of the playoff between Billy Dixon, Jim Long, Ian Jamieson and Iain Duncan, but will be too much even for a combination of all four.

Laurence Taylor, who is the blackadder's son in law, will be up against the Scott 'the power' Hunter. Advice and coaching from Eric will not be enough for Laurence.

Trained to peak better than any of Henry Cecil's superstar thoroughbreds, it was no surprise to see Donald Petrie comfortably qualify for this year's Reid Rose Bowl. This is the second year in a row Donald has reached this stage but, I feel Ali Roy will provide the shock of the round by progressing.

John McQuillan versus Frank Molloy. A hard one to call, but will take Neil Lennon's advice and go for John.

The ever popular Dugald Carmichael, who everyone seemed to want to be with in round one, is up against the returning Davie Dougans. Davie is also progressing strongly in the Challenge Cup, and it is appropriate that last Saturday was the birthday of Dr Joseph Guillotine, born in 1738. Davie can get ready for the chop if he goes much further in both competitions. Sorry Dugald, Davie to get through.

Steven Orr against previous winner Peter Gallagher. Peter is also focussed on the Challenge Cup and is incapable of competing on two fronts. Steven to sail through.

Captain Charlie Paul is up against Michael O'Neil and is giving away 15 shots, which will be too much for him.

On Sunday the club hosted the annual Tennent Trophy. There were a number of visitors from all around the globe for this International event. The sponsors from Tennents and also a good few others who had never played our course absolutely raved about it. Hopefully they will spread the word. Unfortunately the group of Americans thought the layout was superb but the greens were far too slow by their standards. Unbelievable!

A terrific turnout saw the best ever scoring for any fourball competition in the club. Coming in with a net 58 was Pat Tinney and Raymond Barr (who had four birdies), only to discover that Steven Lapsley and his partner Jeremiah Hart from Old Ranfurly, had pipped them with a net 57. Big J started with 2 net twos to launch their round.
Thanks go to Charlie Marner, Stan Austin, Jim Duncan and the Mauler for their considerable help on the day. Kevin Campbell, our pro, also helped to make this event run very smoothly. Kevin's raffle prize of a fourball to Gleddoch was won by the Kaiser himself, Jim Long.

Provost Trophy - 22 May 2010

Provost Trophy Full Results

Provost Trophy Draw

Incredidibly Saturday saw one third of the season gone and it will soon be Winter. A huge entry turned up to compete in the Provost Trophy quailifying. Some members must have thought it was a tribute to the former provost of another city and took performance affecting substances when marking out their cards. Disqualification was the order of the day, unfortunately. The final cut off score was the usual 64 where the only real hard luck story was from Gordon Leith and Ross McWilliams who finished with three net bogeys. Peter Gallagher cannot complain about Jimmy McAulay not helping, as Peter only contributed to the one hole, the seventeenth, and that was with a bogey. A par would have got them into the draw.

The first team out the hat was actually the winning pair of Steven Gordon and the sleeping policeman, who shot a net 60. However the top tie of the round will be won by Mark Scanlan and Steven Mullan.

No one has ever won the Provost three times, so Kenny Roy and Cameron McLellan will be hoping to go all the way and should progress against a polis and a lawyer.

Strangely, the third match actually made a request that they play each other. Rab McLaughlin and the anti social convenor are up against another pair who are going for a three times win. If he can avoid suspension, then Simon and Graeme will easily go through.

Jim Maxwell demonstrated what he was made of, by losing his recent Challenge Cup tie from a position of four up. So him and Davie Docherty will find on form Jim Fleming and Derek Leitch too tough.

In the less attractive bottom half we have the battle of the brothers. Hopefully recovering from a shock defeat to Peter, Gordon and Ronnie Parker will take out the other brothers in Chalkie and Frank.

Stewarts Reid and Matt had an incredible back nine of 27 and will be burnt out. Favourites for the trophy, Scott Forrest and Tom McLoughlin to easily come through.

Steven McCafferty and Stevie Wilkie against David Barr and Stewart Munro. This is actually a tie between Steven versus David and I take David's length and shots to get them into the quarters.

Transport entrepreneurs Raymond and Jim will be told to get on their bus by Jim Duncan and Alan Rodgers.

May Medal & Belhaven Qualifier

Having watched a similar, great, sporting administrator,in Lord Treisman, being forced to leave his post following some, probably warranted, loose remarks made about others, it is with great care that this blog is penned.

Again, and it is worth repeating, we have had many favourable reports coming back from players who have represented the club in away fixtures, notably the seniors, that our course is quite a long way ahead of neighbouring courses in terms of quality of greens and general presentation. Well done to the staff and a pat on the back for the members who have responded to the cry for repairing pitchmarks.

The May medal and Belhaven qualifier saw another superb turnout of 165 members and competition was fierce for the right to represent the club. Another interesting aspect of Saturday was the number of players still in the Challenge Cup who fought their way round to good scores. This is something which was never levelled against the self annointed M & H.

Having bragged for a few weeks that he was on the cusp of a particularly good score, the Lord of the Splash returned a gross ninety one for actually his poorest round of the year. We shall put it down to the fact that he was left devastated, when he turned up to discover that his long-standing playing companion had disappeared under the witness protection programme and may never be seen again.

In section two, in particular, we had a number of players who will feel they missed out on good chances to considerably improve their handicaps. Strangely a number of 11 /12 handicappers used up around half their handicaps over just three or four holes. David Docherty dropped six shots over 6,7,8, & 9 for a 69. Robert McLeod had a run of 6,5,6,4 for his last four holes in scoring a 68. Alan Currie and Pat Tinney both stumbled round the loop in five over for a 68 and Kevin Murphy took six shots from his handicap over the same holes, again for a 68.

Securing second spot in section two was Roger McKirdy. Fresh from taking out one of 'Los Galacticos' in the Challenge Cup, Donald also dropped five shots in the loop, but held on for a net 66. The overwhelming medal winner was Gordy Parker. Gordy, who has been sailing close to the wind recently, survived a careful study of his scorecard which did not reveal any legitimate cause for disqualification, so his result stands. A superb front nine of 36 was added to a back nine of 39 for a net 63. Gordy puts his recent terrific run down to encouraging his wife to take up the game. A rather extreme move in my opinion!

The section three combatants (not a good term if you are a member of some posher clubs upcounty, allegedly.) of George Anderson and Jackie Norman just missed out by a single shot from Gordy's brother Murdo, who scored a net 68 with a finish of 7,5,7.

Section one saw Peter Gallagher, who will be delighted to see Challenge Cup opponent, Gordy, losing a few strokes, coming in second with a 66. Taking the spoon with his own 66 was Stephen McCafferty. Stephen will join Gordy in representing the club at the Belhaven qualifier in mid August. The scratch prize was taken by Paul McFarlane from Craig Thomson on the countback. Craig's praying on Saturday afternoon made no difference.

It would be appreciated if those who have their names on the entry sheet for the upcoming Tennent Trophy put their entry monies in the secretary's box or leave behing the bar or in the pro shop. There are a number of other members who are willing to do just that, but are blocked from the sheet by offenders. This year, absolutely definitely and starting on Monday night, names will be removed if there is no entry fee of £12 per team received.

Sat 8 May 2010 - Spring Meeting & April Medal

Waking up thinking it was the Reid Rose Bowl Qualifier, the self appointed M & H convenor donned his Jack Sparrow costume and dropped in a 75 less 12 for a net 63. What a blunder, but, no doubt, he still has at least another one of these up his sleeve.

Anyway, a regulation par at the first was followed by a putt from off the back of the second for a birdie. Poor four at the third. Blocked out at the left of the fourth fairway meant a six was run up. Unable to get onto the green at five in regulation resulted in another six. Easy par at the sixth. Tremendous tee shot at seven was not matched by a poor putt for birdie from close range.Bogey at nine totalled 39 out. Long range putt at ten from almost off green at left hand side ensures some cash and neutralises usual bogey to come at eleven. Missed green to right of twelve and putts up and holes six footer for par. Normal four at thirteen. Comfortable par at fourteen is followed by poor approach to fifteen which means a bogey. Seven iron above hole at sixteen presents long range two putt. Extremely poor tee shot (first of the day) is followed by a terrible six iron for safety and then wedge is still not on the green. Excellent putt from ten yards off green is stone dead. Good drive at eighteen means trusty seven wood is called into play, but almost puts ball into Thomson's bunker. Superb chip to ten feet is followed up by lovely putt. Best ever score is equalled. Three quid secured from PC Glen.

There were another 173 members making up the numbers on a day where the greenstaff used their prerogative to delay the start of play. This time for what they assumed was a light dusting of volcanic ash on the greens. Jonny is sorely missed already.

Taking second place in section two with a 64 was Glenn Greenan who continues excellent form and is a credit to new professional Kevin's teaching skills. Davie Jamieson was the best of the stragglers with a net 67.

The scratch score was secured by Amazonian Stu. Previous Lyle Medal winner, Stu, will reflect on a five at the seventh as his only poor hole. In second place was Gerry Donnachie. Having been selected for the Newton Shield team (kit boy, probably) Gerry has driven his handicap down to four for the first time. However, three dropped shots around the loop would suggest a major frailty in his game. Might be the fact he faces the wrong way. After his sabbatical of last year, Paul Mitchell is making his mark again and returned a net 66. With so many good scores, the CSS dropped to a 68.

In section three we had net 67s from Jim Fleming. Maybe the sweep money might entice Jim to invest in a jumper which is not blue. Sure Kevin has other colours in the shop. Ben McGhee had a steady round to equal the 67, but John Ruddy (surely not the Motherwell goalie who has been throwing the ball instead of catching it?) had his best ever score in an eighty three.

Wed 5 May 2010 - Sweepstake

Every competition throws up interesting statistics. On Wednesday we had three twos from Stuart Alexander, which comes close to the record of four in one round, which unbelievably is held by the self appointed M & H convenor. It is a fact that he also birdied the fifth on that particular day and still missed the buffer. Draw your own conclusions.
Tremendous scoring in section one from Mark Scanlan who finished with two fives for a 68 and Alex Roy who is on a real streak just now with another 69. The stress levels of last year's captaincy have gone and Alex's only worry just now is how to get into the Past Captains car park spot. Not much of a challenge there. I believe.

Following on from last year's Challenge Cup victory, the Great White Hope, has not missed a beat. His 75 less 10 cleaned up in section two and his highlite was a two at the sixth. Davie is still marching on for a defence of his title. Ged Bell, having sobered up from celebrations the previous night had a creditable net 67 along with Jim Harkness. The Lord of the Splash narrowly missed out on a financial return with a 68.

The major talking point in section three was a two at the fifteenth from Bill Jamieson. Bill, you remember, has his own personal psychiatrist marking his card and when the card was studied, the M & H thought he was going daft!
The winner of section three was new member Ian Moore who shot 87 less 23 for a 64. Well done uncle Ian!
With it being an odd week Joe Mitchell got a two.

Sat 1 May 2010 - Oct 2009 Medal

With it being a holiday weekend we had a terrific turnout of 180. When this occurs, slow play is inevitable and there were reports of many rounds of over 4 hours. Having spent Friday at the Kintyre course, along with Jazz Orr, frontrunner Eck was obviously still suffering from the ill effects of a final hole capitulation and could not drag the field along at the required pace. PLEASE do not ask either of these bottle merchants for a synopsis of their game.
The competition on Saturday was the October medal of 2009 and it took a lot of organising to arrange the October 2009 weather to go along with it.

However, David Barr managed a magnificent round of 72, overcoming a wobble of dropping two shots over 6 and 7.
What a week it has been for Alan Young. Tremendous scoring in his match for the seniors against Largs, collects the scratch prize as a section 2 player which has never been done with such a large field before and turfs pal Jim Kerr out the Challenge Cup. Alan only needs to buy a round to cap off a memorable seven days.

As regards the seniors match, it has been pointed out that the following occured
Ian McDermid & Harry McLean         lost
Raymond Barr & Murdo Parker         lost
Ian McFadyen &  Kenny Gilmour      lost
Dave Terrey & Syd Durk                won
Alan Young & Brian Wallace           won
Jim Sutherland & Joe Bryant           won

Largs had sent their strongest team but we still fancied ourselves. So after game 3 we were looking at a humiliating defeat. However a magnificent strong performance from our final 3 games salvaged a draw and 1 point. Largs gaining an away draw scored 2 points.

The entry sheet has been posted for the Tennent Trophy. Entry is £12 per team and it would be expected that anyone who appends his name will pay the entry prior to the day. There may be other members willing to do both. Expect your name to be removed if the entry is not received, sorry.

Wednesday 28 April 2010 - Wed Medal

In quite difficult and windy conditions, with the 16th in particular playing extremely tough, where only the most gifted could actually reach the green, we were again presented with a couple of marvelous scores. Alan Young, who missed the wind by keeping under it, had a 72 less 10 and Craig Love recorded his best ever round with a 73 less 11. Jim Kerrigan, otherwise known as Ian's brother, managed to mar a terrific round by taking a 7 at the last, but still managed a net 64.

Incredibly we now have had 3 holes in one this year. Alan Currie, fresh from a victory over the anti social convenor, probably had a dream that he would get a first ever at the 13th. Well done, Alan.

Saturday 24 April 2010 - The Navy Cup Greensome

The Navy Cup greensomes is one of those fixtures on the calendar which causes much angst amongst the membership. Having cojoined with a particular member in the dark and distant past due to some set of circumstances which neither player can recall and with generally unsuccessful results, members are left seemingly stuck with each other for ever, with neither having the nerve to ask for a divorce.

Along comes the Navy Cup and miraculously the two names somehow appear on the entry sheet, with the much superior player deciding to go along with it this year, but will make the break next year. 365 days later they will get in touch with said partner and lie to them that they are unavailable due to injury, illness, need to go into work, going on holiday etc, etc in the hope that the poor guy can get a replacement who will be lumbered with him for years to come and thus open up the field for a better choice of running mate. You know who you are!

Lets take a look at some of teams and how they performed and mentally speculate on what went wrong.
Nicol, a determined competitor, partnered Kenny Piper. Kenny was possibly a bit inhibited as they were joined by a pair of markers, so was understandably flustered when playing his own resultant tee shot going down the ninth. Disqualification was the result.

Bill Jamieson and Roger Sykes? Was this some sort of strange therapy recommended by the good doctor for absolute lost causes? A round with your clinician?

Then there is the so called Marmite team of Gordon McFarlane and Robert McLeod? How did this one originate? Is Gordon a representative for an obscure charity?

Normally when a player joins that last great sporting dictator (with the demise of Juan Antonio Samaranch) that is the so called M & H convenor, you would not expect the past Challenge Cup winner to continually miss putt after putt from close in. Taxi for Morry Glen!

How about Lapsley & McDaid? They probably deserve each other,as the recriminations in Blair's Folly around 4:30 on Saturday evening were flying around and the blame word was being bandied about, as yet another chance of a trophy was thrown away by the other person's errors.

An M & H prediction of a winning score of 63 was blown away by the two runners up. A 62 will generally be more than enough, but David Carney and Jake McQuillan and Mark Cannon and Caesar Long (well, he is never away from the forum) were left in the slipsteam of a tremendous 60 by first time trophy winners John Leith and Don Shields. Don was an unlucky runner up by virtue of countback in last week's Crawford Bogey, so is on form. 38, 37 minus 15 is certainly impressive.

Salutations must go to Mark Taylor, Davie Bruce and Alan Currie. Their efforts will mean the anto social convenor has a bit more time to concentrate on the darts.
